Post by Miss Molly »

Ah! Why does it say my disk is full when trying to capture videos? My hard drive has plenty of room. Help help! And thank you! :)

What do you classify as plenty of room?
What are you capturing from?
How is it connected?
What file type are you capturing as?

For example an uncompressed avi file will take up 65gb per hour

Thanks Graham,

What do you classify as plenty of room? ummm... 200GB
What are you capturing from? Canon HG10 HDD
How is it connected? USB
What file type are you capturing as? I am using the option of Import from DVD/DVD-R

I have gotten a couple hours already off my camera into the Ulead program.

As you will have seen from an even casual glance at posts on this forum in recent days and weeks, AVCHD is a difficult format from nearly every aspect. Although I have not heard of this particular error message associated with it, I cannot say I am surprised you are having problems.

Apart from the questions Graham has already asked, what version of Video Studio are you using? It must be VS11.5+ as fully patched (version 11.5.0157.2) to be able to deal with AVCHD. Next, you tell us nothing about your computer. But it needs to be at least a Core 2 Duo to be able to edit AVCHD in real time, and P4 3.0 GHz with hyperthreading and above to edit it using Smart Proxy.

Normally, import is done in VS11.5+ using the the 'Import from DVD/DVD-VR or AVCHD' command. Was it only shorthand that you did not mention AVCHD in the option you use, or is there no reference to AVCHD in your version of VS?

Have you tried copying the files from the camera to your computer hard disk and importing from there?

Along with Ken's suggestions,

As you are not capturing but simply importing, what happens when you try to import a file from another source, say a memory stick? A file already on your hard drive?

What happens if you put the dvd into your dvd drive and import from there - which is preferable to connecting the cam?

Is the disc finalised?

Are you sure you didn't try to send the info back to the disc in the cam rather than to your hard drive?

Erm... you don't finalise a hard disc camera, only a mini DVD in a mini DVD camera. And so far they haven't worked out a way to use a mini DVD to record AVCHD directly... And of course the user has a hard disk camera...

Of course, the OP hasn't filled in her details as pwe PLEASE READ THIS BEFORE POSTING..., so we have no idea of her set up. If her large disk is a USB and she is trying to transfer from USB, then she may be beating her head against a brick wall. Her best chance (no guarantee) is to make sure the two devices are on separate USB ports and to make sure than no other USB devices are connected to either port.

Alternatively, if her OS is on a partition strapped for space, there may not be any room for temp files.

Graham -- yes, you have a point. But I had already picked it up and covered it my question as follows (though you have to have VS11.5+ to see what I mean):
Normally, import is done in VS11.5+ using the the 'Import from DVD/DVD-VR or AVCHD' command.
I confess I had the language somewhat wrong (going from memory), as it is really 'Insert DVD/DVD-VR or AVCHD'. But that's how it is done with an AVCHD camera -- using the same command as to import from a DVD/DVD-VR! Illogical as it may sound... But then again, we *are* dealing with AVCHD which hardly brings out the best in anyone!!!

Oh, and Devil, talking about reading posts, "his" name is Miss Molly, so I am not sure your have the gender correct!!! 8)
