transitions

Post by Ian Sharpe »

One of the reasons I was hesitant in abandoning Pinnacle Studio was that I would have to leave my cool transitions behind.

So I thought , why not make a short movie clip in Pinnacle with some short black blocks either side of a transition.

& then use that clip in VStudio putting it between scenes & getting it to move how you want it & voila, almost as if I was still using Studio!!!

I am still experimenting, I guess someone else here has already done this??
cheers

Given that I almost exclusively use cross fades and fade to black, with only the occasional foray into other transitions, I am not sure I would personally bother going to all that trouble. VS has a wide variety of transitions. I also use CanopusFX and Adorage, which have great and well executed transitions -- though the Adorage ones can be expensive!

And welcome to the forums. Nice to see someone from Braidwood!! I pass through there regularly on my way to my beach house at Rosedale... Love the Braidwood pies!!!   (Not to mention that the Aladdin shop there managed to replace an antique kerosene lamp chimney I broke 25 years ago and was otherwise unable to replace...)

I gave up using all those fancy transitions long ago.
When you first start out in Video Editing you tend to go overboard to "impress" friends and family with all those fancy transitions between scenes using a different one each time. As you get more mature with video editing you begin to realize that they are in fact distracting and your audience begins to get bored with them.

Look at most TV programs or Hollywood films.
Only the cheap cheesy one's use lots of transitions, the rest use either cross fades or straight cuts. In fact if you are doing a photo slide show, what looks far more professional is to synchronise the slide change with the audio track.

There are times when a transition can come in handy. I recall a recent video where I had panned across a square a few times from slightly different positions in the square. later whilst editing I wanted to make it all look smooth, even a cross fade was unsuitable because it would cause a slight jump due to the position of the camcorder at the time of recording.
I eventually found a white flash effect looked natural and masked the slight change in the position of buildings etc. as the scene was being panned across.

There are several extra FREE transitions available courtesy of forum Member Stefan Burger.

Ken,

thanks, yes Braidwood pies are pretty good!, I know of folk who drive from Canb JUST for the pies.

Sjj,

Thanks for the link, & I agree that one can tend to go overboard with effects etc, the same with menus, I dont use menus at all now. But there are a couple of cool transitions that I have used in S9 (one is of a champagne bottle being popped) I used that when I taped my step daughters wedding its very effective. I will see how I go with my suggestion, it would only be for one off special things, like above. You are right VS does have some good stuff straight out of the box.

Thanks for your time, guys

Hi,

I'm new to Ulead VS and just want a simple fade in and fade out from black at the beginning and end of each movie I make. I noticed the "Fade to Black" under effects, but I can't seem to add it and the beginning and end of my movie, only between clips. Any ideas on how to fade FROM black at the beginning and TO black at the end?

Thanks

Bones,

If you place a short color clip at the beginning and end of your project, you can add a transition between it and the video. To do this, go to Gallery, select color and drag a color clip to the beginning and end. You can shorten or lengthen this to your liking.

So if you are after fade from or to black, place a 1 or 2 second black clip at the beginning and end, and then add the crossfade transition at the beginning, and the fade to black one at the end, just after and before the black panels, respectively...

Braidwood, small town in Eastern NSW, OZ. Pop 1100

The whole town is heritage listed, but thats another story. The town is about 1 hr from Canberra on the way to the NSW South Coastal area of Eurobodalla. A hell of a lot of Canberra folk travel to this area of the coast.

For at least the last 30 years the Braidwood Bakery has has great meat pies & bread. The bakery has always managed to do this despite having changed hands a couple of times, I guess in that time.

The baker was recently on ACT TV, just having won another award for his stuff.
