rendering test with a solid state drive

Post by drl711 »

I received my economic stimulus check a couple of weeks ago, and I immediately bought an Mtron Mobi 32gb solid state hard drive to play with. Rated 100mb\sec read, 80mb\sec write, .1 ms access time and 76K sequential IOPS. http://www.dvnation.com/

Thought I would see how video editing compared between my 750 gb MHD and my SSD.

I set everything up on the C drive; my 11 plus program files, source file, destination folder and even 4gb page file. I figured that would put the most stress on the hard drive at one time.
My source file was 7,597,421 KB AVI. I ran each rendering twice. These are my results;

Create disk image: MHD 19m24s and 19m24s
SSD 20m03s and 20m31s

Create DVD Folders: MHD 18m03s and 18m02s
SSD 19m31s and 19m44s

Create video file, NTSC 4:3 DVD Dolby Digital 5.1:

MHD 18m00s and 18m50s
SSD 18m10s and 18m10s

Needless to say, I was surprised. The SSD did not make a bit of difference.

Well, actually it did. In every case, it took longer, even if only by a little. Says it all, I am afraid... So much for the wave of the future ... for the moment anyway! LOL!!!!  8)

It would appear that the SSD is a tad slower, which should not be the case. However what about your other system components, such as the Read/Access times for your RAM? Remember a computer is only as fast as it's slowest component. So if the RAM is slower than what the SSD drive can handle, that will appear to make the drive read/write times slower, or even the FSB for your system.

Why are you laughing? I have waited 20 years to try video editing on a solid state hard drive. My disappointment is profound, to say the least.

I think my expectations were a bit misguided.
These rendering functions are cpu intensive, not hard drive intensive, so the differences in HD should not really matter. Since the cpu is the same, of course the times should be very close to the same.

Never Mind.

Thank you for sharing the results of your tests with us.
Interesting and as you say disappointing render times.

Despite that I would expect a solid state hard drive to have a longer life span. No moving parts and less heat. Probably more robust when installed in portable devices such as laptops and camcorders.
