Spam on this group...?

Post by JohnG »

Hi,

I got a message from "praebo1557" pointing to a website.
No explanation as to what it's about, or why he picked me to message.

To me that's spam. If this site is of relevance to people on this forum,
why isn't this guy posting publicly?

Have others been hit with this, too?
Does this kind of thing happen often (my first)?

To praebo1557, and others who contemplate going this route -- do NOT do this!

John
(apologies to the Group for the tone of this, but this crap really tics me off)

By a message, do you mean a private message from within the forum?

The forum moderators(if you can find one) have the ability to bar him from using the private messege facility.

yes, I was hit with 2 pm messages.

And the same idiot keeps posting stuff like "fill_in_name, I totally agree with your argument"

the user keeps spamming the forum, and his id is "praebo1557"

I have moderator status but no moderator buttons, it has to be set up in the control panel for each forum. Whether an oversite or on purpose I have no idea. I pointed this out to them but still no buttons. I've also pointed it out that particular user to the only admin that I can seem to get in contact with a week or two ago, there's 1 or two other users too. I know one thing they had better nip it in the bud because this forum has some pretty good use and it will be exploited once word gets around.

I have my own phpbb forum so I'm pretty familiar with it. The trouble is that most moderators don't have the power to ban a user account. they would have to specifically set it up. If I at least had mod buttons I could delete the message, not much but better than nothing.

I'll PM the admin again and hopefully get some buttons. There's alot of stuff I could do to improve and take advantage of the features this forum offers besides that if I had some damn buttons.

Yeah, this guy is definately up to no good. I checked his "profile" and looked at all his messages and they all say something like "I totally agree with you" and then a web address in large type (to get your attention).

This very helpful forum doesn't need morons like that trying to screw things up :!:

I would just try to totally ignore his/her posts.
Never respond, never react.
They will disappear.

Sad to say but these people usually do this because they
need attention.

For all we know this could be a child.

Actually it's probably a bot, they sign them up and set them loose. I have three open categorys on my forum that you can post anonymously too. The only one that gets whacked continuously is the one linked to a very popular website I have. Since it's so popular it's easily found by the bots, they even have auto registering bots. The newest version of phpBB now has a image verification registration to prevent this.

MD,

That's like telling people not to fall prey to phone or email scams. Inevitably, somebody does. That's why they don't go away.

It's a shame some people get their kicks from screwing around with people.

This spammer should have been kicked off the forum long ago.

The biggest problem, by far, is that the "Web Master" is either non-existant or completely unresponsive to any problem. I have sent emails and they are ignored or fall directly into the old bit bucket. I have phoned Ulead customer service and they promise to do something - but never do anything regarding problems on this forum. Very frustrating.

You are correct but the first step I would use is to let them know
they are ignored by not responding.

That was only my first step.

Sending personnel PM's to people is harassment.

If he persists then the web master can trap his IP address and should
report it to

I received a Nigerian 419 scam PM on the Canopus forums through a PM about two months ago. The moderator that I reported the PM to indicated that other forum members had also received that crap.

It's common on forums, that's one of the big reasons for having mods. The mods over at VH can ban people themselves, you won't find a single spam post over there. There like fly's on **** when someone starts, instant ban. I've eliminated it almost entirely on mine by banning entire IP ranges for countries but that's impratical for most boards since they are international.

I'm a software engineer for a company that processes financial information, and one of my responsibilities is to reduce fraud in online transactions.

Without going into too much detail, we use IP address and geolocation information extensively -- some of our clients just won't accept any transactions coming from certain parts of the world. And hopping around, using proxies, or using backdoors left by trojans on unsuspecting broadband users' PCs doesn't make any difference. I deal with this crap every day.
