Jerky video capture

Post by sugarbear »

I'm using Vid Studio 8 and an Avermedia PCI card to capture vid from Vid camera/ and/or VCR and all seems to go well till I check it....and it seems to be just slightly jerky on playback...I do a lot of vids of actors and dancers on stage and you really only notice the jerkyness when they move kinda quickly across the stage....almost looks a little like a frame or two gets left out and then all continues for a few seconds then it happens again....audio is perfect just vid is affected

You probably have your field order wrong, use top field first and mainatain it throught the entire process from capture to burn. There's more here, ignore the first reply and read what Vhelp has to say.

incorrect field order usually shows up when playing back on an interlaced monitor -- like your tv. I guess it could be seen on a computer as well (I'm not sure).

What type of videos are you capturing? uncompressed .avi's, other type of .avi, mpeg-1, mpeg-2, divx, etc...?

What resolution and bitrate are you using?

Can you determine if you are having any dropped frames during capture?

I had a similar type of problem with jerky motion when transfering my home recorded VHS tapes from VCR to DVD using a Leadtek Winfast TV2000 XP Expert and capturing with the bundled Winfast PVR software. The motion problem wasn't obvious on the computer monitor but it really showed up on TV but in an odd way. Outdoor scenes with actors in the video played back OK but as soon as indoor scenes started then movement such as actors walking across the set was jerky. I traced this problem to the field order used by Winfast PVR which seems to default to MPEG capturing with lower field order first and no obvious way to change it. I carried out some experimental capturing with VS8 using lower field first and then upper field first. The lower field first captures showed the same jerky motion as with Winfast PVR but the upper field first captures played back Ok, nice and smooth. So now I do all my VCR captures with VS8 in MPEG using upper field first.

UVS also has a feature to auto-detect the field order of analog video sources -- it's at the bottom of the Capture panel.
