I read two previous posts after searching were the rubber band adjustment and the fade in fade out buttons don't actually do anything to the volume of the sound.
One was resolved by processing a .wav with different software, another by re-splitting the sound from the video.
My situation is with splitting the sound from the video and I have tried it all to no avail.
I have manually moved the rubber bands to zero - no effect - the sound is as set in the volume with no change. Of course I also used the fade in fade out buttons.
This is not a problem with the sound not making it to zero, but rather no effect what so ever. The sound follows the straight green line, regardless of where I move the red rubber band (or the fade buttons do).
Here is some information:
VS 11.5+
Source was from a DV via USB Stream, with the "DVD" format chosen (I actually have questions about this but I will start a new topic) so the file, both audio and video, is xyz.mpeg
I spit audio off, deleted video, re-added a different clip, spliut audio, etc....the fade never works.
any input appreciated,

Are you listening to your changes while still in Audio View? For some stoopid reason (IMHO) you have to switch to Project View in order to hear the audio changes.

I tried both project and clip. As I'm doing more research Im wondering if this could have anything to do with using the usb stream rather than firewire connection when this clip was captured? I was traveling when I purchased VS and tried to figure out what I might need before leaving (killing time on long train rides here -> bring the laptop, the vid camera, and all those tapes of my 10 month old daughter!) - I grabbed the usb for the camera since I didn't have a 4 to 4 firewire, only 4 to 6.

Well, you should have captured via firewire to dv-avi format, but I really don't see what effect capturing via USB would have to do with not being able to fade the audio.
Try downloading the free Audacity and use that. I know it's an extra step, but it will get the job done. From VS go to Share>Create Audio File. Import that wav file into Audacity, do your fades and anything else you want to do to it, then bring it back into VS and put it on the audio track.
