Hello and Happy Holidays!
I am currently testing trial versions of both Paint Shop Pro 9 and Photoimpact 10 to decide which to purchase. I am currently leaning towards Photoimpact for various reasons, but I have not been able to find a Background Eraser in Photoimpact such as Paint Shop Pro and MS Digital Suite 10 have.
Can anyone please tell me if one actually is PI 10 and if so where? And if not, what is the go round procedure to accomplish this in PI 10?
P.s. very impressed with the Object Extractor in PI 10.
Thank You

Magic Wand
I think the Magic Wand does a similar thing to the Background Eraser. Also, there's a Smart Lasso and Mask Mode. Check them out in Chapter 4 of the PI 10 User Guide:

The eraser in PhotoImpact works on objects. In order to erase a background, you can do the followiing:
1. Right-click on your image, and on the pop-up menu, seledt All
2. Right-click again and select Convert to object.
Now you can use the Object Paint Eraser tool.
If you need more help with the eraser, try this tutorial. http://wwell.net/tutorials/pi10/eraser/index.html

Thank both of you very much for the tips. I have been trying out both Paint Shop Pro and Photoimpact and decided t go with Photoimpact. I seem to be more comfortable with its interface.
Funny, but I started in Photography in 1974 and it took me until this year to abandon completely all my 35mm film cameras and equipment. With a Canon S1 IS snd all its features (next is a Digital SLR), I guess the next logical step is to get into digital image processing.
Thank You all once again.

Background eraser
Legend,
Thank you too. I have been using the "extract tool" which seems to work great. I really think that PhotoImpact has the edge over Paint Shop Pro, at the least, just as good. Can't understand why in the U.S. it doesn't sell as well as Paint Shop Pro.

Well.. I think one reason it doesn't sell as well in the US is... you never see it in any of the stores! When the Nova version came out, I saw it in a number of stores but it seems that once they sold the stock.. it wasn't replaced because I dont' see it anymore. It's too bad because PI outshines the competition hands down!!

Photoimpact 10 background eraser?
MaryLouW,
How true, but here is something interesting: I inquired via phone to NOVA whether their PI was the same as Ulead. The salesman explained that their version, 8.5, corresponded to Ulead's 8 with some "extra" goodies bundled. Knowing that Ulead PI 10 was already available, I asked why I should purchase the older version. He replied that perhaps I should wait until February when NOVA'S version of PI 10 is to be released.
Didn't matter to me, I purchased PI 10 at J&R in NYC. Most stores in the New York metro area carry Nova's version rather than Ulead's, if it is carried at all. (Best Buy, Circuit City, Comp USA, Micro Center, all carry Nova's version, which by the way, as of today, is being sold for just $49.99! Looks like Nova's version 10 will be out shortly)

Actually, their salesperson gave you some wrong info. Their 8.5 corresponds to Ulead's 8XL. There are many differences in what's contained in the Easy Palette but the features are the same. If you're interested in seeing a comparison of the two side by side, you can find that info here: http://www.pircnet.com/pixl-vs-pro/index.html
Now.. one reason you don't see the Ulead version in the stores is because Ulead handles the on-line sales whereas Nova does the majority of the in-store marketing. If you check the Nova site, you'll notice they do not offer upgrades and downloads and such - just the end user product. Good choice to go with PI10!!
