New To Forum: Before I Buy/Try Questions

Post by Dcat »

I have a new Vista x64 machine and am debating on NLE programs. Several years ago I tried ULead and was unimpressed, but stumbled upon positive comments and so here I am. Candid replies to my remaining questions will be very appreciated:

1. Read that VS 11.5+ is Vista x64 compatible. Does anyone have real world experience: How reliable/stable is it? Does it run it 64 bit or 32 bit compatibility mode?

2. Can/does VS 11.5+ work with multiple monitors?

3. I have some important raw digital camcorder footage that I had imported into Adobe Premier Elements 2 a couple years ago that I need to finish editing. Is it possible to import it into VS, or do I have to upload again from my camcorder into VS?

4. Is there a good supply of recommended tutorials (video and otherwise) for VS? (There's a ton for Adobe and plenty for Sony too.)

Thanks much for any help.

1) I use VS on my 64 bit Vista. It works fine. the only problem I have is that occasionally when I have finished editing for the day when I save then close VS I get a message that VS has crashed... I simply click on end program. It doesn't effect the project in anyway shape or form

2) Have not tried this as I only have one monitor. I suspect it will work on one monitor and you could browse the net on the other monitor

3) You should have no problems here

4) Yes... plenty

There is a tutorial section on these forums and on other sites there's this:

and you will always get free help here on this forum too for specific problems not covered in tutorials

Thanks for your response, Clevo, helpful indeed.

I want to use two monitors to extend the editing workspace, such as the timeline.

A little disconcerting that you are having that crash error on closure. Also suggests that VS is running in 32 bit mode, common for about 98% of consumer apps, but that should change. Wonder how progressive Corel will be with VS and other applications in that (and other) regards.

Anyone else have comments about my questions?

I find on my 20" LCD monitor there is plenty of room whith the native resolution.

The crash only happens every now and then and it never bothers me. When I open VS for the next session it asks if I want to recover my previous project. I usually say no then carry on like normal...open the project. I can;t be bothered working out why it does this and because it really is no hassle I doubt I will ever try.

Yes it does run in 32 bit mode.

Version 12 is coming out soon-ish.

And that particular crash -- after you have actually closed VS -- is not confined to 64 bit systems. I run Vista Ultimate 32 bit and regularly (though not constantly) get that error message after closer. And, like Clevo, I just as regularly ignore it.

Thanks guys. And good to talk with you again Ken - we exchanged emails a month or so ago when I was unsuccessful joining this forum.

I'm riding the fence between VS 11.5+ & Adobe PE 4. Everything about Adobe is more robust with respect to number of users, activity /support on forums, tutorial and "how to." And I have really liked using Photoshop Elements in the past and plan to continue using it, but will need to upgrade from v4. to v6. And the convenience and integration with Premiere and Elements is very appealing. On the other hand, much more negatives posted about Premiere Elements 4.0 on Vista, especially x64 - even though like VS, it is listed as compatible but runs in 32 bit mode. And not a whisper on future releases - features, whether there will be a true 84 bit version, nor time frame.

I find no real complaints about VS running on Vista x64, though again, the user group is probably much smaller and may also have a lesser percentage of active posters (or no posting for lack of serious issues). How well does VS play with Adobe Photoshop? I've seen somewhere that VS 12 is out Asia or Japan, but does that mean that v.12 is on the near horizon elsewhere? I've seen the price for 11.5+ drop which typically foretells of a pending new release in 60-90 days. And what of features and true 64 bit mode? Everything is so top secret. But would there be an attractive upgrade price? So much to grovel and consider and not enought time to try both products. Maybe I'll just go with the equivalent Sony, ha! (I doubt I would do that, but I will look at it a bit.)

Cheers!
