title bar

Post by dnaraz »

I am BRAND NEW to PSP X2>>>> for some reason my file names won't appear in the title bar when I open an image. They appear on my thumbnails....but not the title bar. I am trying to learn how to work with channels and even when I split it up into RGB channels...the name of the channel is not listed in the title bar. VERY FRUSTRATING! When I go to close it, it will ask me if I want to save changes to RGB Red...for instance....but the name is not displayed in the title bar. I have looked in preferences, but cannot seem to find anything to change this. Any suggestions?
Thanks

Oo, thats a curious one because it really should be displaying the name of the current image - there on the titlebar - at all times. There's no preference setting to turn it off.

Please forgive me if this is too obvious but:

When an image is new, and you haven't saved it yet, PSP doesn't yet know what the name of the image is and so the titlebar will just call it "Image1" (or 2, or 3, or...). Once the image has been saved, then the titlebar should change to show the name you saved the file under.

There's another place that the image name will be shown - on the Windows menu. Again, when the image is new the name will just be "Image1" (or similar) and once it's been saved then it'll show the full name.

Here's how it all looks for me, and this is how it should look:
Image

I've got two images open there. One is called "news.png" and I've opened that one from disk. The other is just called "Image3" because its a new one I've created in PSP and haven't saved yet.

The images' own little titlebars show those names, so does the Window menu. The main PSP titlebar just shows "Image3" because I have that one selected at the moment.

If I was to do Save As for the "Image3" one and give it a name there, say "big-blank-space.jpg" then immediately after saving, PSP's titlebar would change to show that name.

So, do you get "ImageN" on the titlebar when you create a new image? Do the image names show up on the Window menu? And how about the image's own little title bar, does that show the name, or "ImageN", or such?

Sorry I can't be more help!

No...I have nothing on the title bar except for the little icon in the corner. Where yours shows "Corel Paint Shop Pro Photo X2 - Image 3" I have nothing but the icon in the corner. Where yours shows "news.png@100% (Raster 1) I have nothing but the icon. Where yours shows "Image3* @ 100% (Raster1)" I have nothing but the icon. When I open up the organizer, it shows the names of the files under the thumbnails. But when I open them in PSP I get nothing. Makes it really hard to work with...not impossible...just harder than it has to be...:) When I get ready to close the file it will ask me "Save changes to Image 3?"...or whatever the name of the file is....but regardless of whether or not I save it, it does not show up on the title bar??? I can't imagine what is going on??? The crazy thing about it is that I THINK it was working a couple of days ago??? As I said...I am new...have been trying to learn the program...and I think it was on there a few days ago...but I could not swear to it. Any other suggestsions? Should I try to uninstall and then reinstall the program?
Thanks

OH....BTW...yes, the file name does show up on the windows menu...just NOT on the title bar of the open or minimized image. I wanted to send you a screen shot, but could not figure out how to do so... I am feeling REALLY dumb today!!!!...LOL

Ah, thanks, that's some useful detail. Man though - you really do have a very strange one there! :-)

I'm afraid I don't know the answer, though I'll do a little digging. Perhaps one of the admins can offer some advice?

Actually, ok, a few ideas maybe...

Try making a new Shortcut to start PSP, then go into the shortcut's properties and put in check in "Disable Visual Themes" on the "Compatability" tab. Run PSP from the new shortcut - it might help.

One wacky thought but you're not using any programs which let you re-style Window's "desktop themes" are you? Something like "WindowBlinds" or such. Could have some impact maybe.

Oo, also, I've heard it alleged that the "Google Toolbar" program can mess around with titlebars in ususual ways some times. If you have that installed, it might be worth trying to disable it or temporarily remove it.

It's possible that the font for the titlebar text could just be missing I guess. Though, IDK, I'dve expected it to cause problems for more than just PSP if that was the case. I believe "Tahoma" and/or "Trebuchet MS" are the fonts used in the common Windows desktop themes. Might be worth just making sure that those fonts are there and working properly.

I'm about out of ideas now. Good luck! :-)

I think allicorn is correct with the suggestion of desktop themes such as Windowblinds. I believe there was a post sometime ago, and the member was using Windowblinds, which caused a similar problem with PSPx2.

For what it's worth, I use "ObjectDock Plus" which is part of Stardock's "WindowBlinds" family and have encountered no issues with X2. Still, ObjectDock and WindowBlinds are not identical apps so I wouldn't necessarily rule out the possibility of a conflict.

Yes I agree, and this may be one of those conflicts that occur because of a specific computer configuration. Some may not have any problems, while others do. A computer is like a finger-print, no two are identical..

OK....I just had to share. First...thank you for all your help. I don't have window blinds and am not sure what it is....but I do run a lot of different desk top themes with desktop architect. I have it programmed to automatically change my theme everyday at 5 AM. I went to bed at 4:30 AM this morning after finally giving up on trying to find out what was wrong with PSP...left the program open....when I got up today and looked at the program...voile!!! It was fixed! Went back into my desktop themes and pulled up the one from yesterday and applied it...and had the same problem in PSP....so....it was my desktop theme!!! WOW! I would have never thought of that. Now I know why so many IT people turn their nose up at desktop themes....LOLOL Thank you so much for all your replies. I hope this helps someone else that may have the same problem someday...:) BTW....I LOVE the program...I have had MORE FUN....who knows...I may be making my OWN desktop themes someday...:)

Wehay! Excellent!

WindowBlinds is basically the same kinda thing as DesktopArchitect. There are a fair few of these sorts of clever theme-jiggling programs around and, I guess, every now and then you might bump into some program or other that doesn't appreciate the jiggling ;-)

Glad you got it fixed.

I have the same problem and has had it on several different computers, both with XP and Vista. Not ALL my computers though.

The file names does not show up, nor does "Paint Shop Pro X" in the top list.

The problem is only there when I use the Graphite Workspace theme though, not when I uncheck it. But I really like the Graphite Workspace Theme and would like to be able to use it.

I use PSP X2 both at home - on 4 different computers atm - and professionally, at work - I'm a web designer and use it for images. I've been working with PSP for many years, and have even been giving PSP lessons online for a couple of years, but this problem seems to be impossible for me to solve.

I might add that I don't have any programs that change the desktop themes. And I've tried the other suggestion, and that does not help either.

Yikes - I think as you can see Stjarna we were already running out of ideas for the previous folks that had this problem so I really don't know what to suggest.

Not that its much help but I actually noticed the titlebar disappear on my PSPX2 the other day - only briefly, and restarting the program fixed it, but it was most odd. The titlebar itself was not shown but Windows clearly still had some idea that it should've been there as, when I dragged PSP around, the rectangle of pixels where the titlebar should have been seemed to kind of "capture" and "drag" a screenshot of whatever part of my desktop was underneath at the time I started dragging. Um, anyway, like I said, not much help - though there do seem to be a variety of things that can interfere with the titlebar for PSP.

You might be at the point where you need to find out if any program you're running is interfering with PSP.

It may be worth trying to restart your machine with no startup programs loaded and see if that makes any difference to PSP. If it does, then you can begin to track down exactly which program is being naughty.

There's some decent help about disabling startup programs on this page but a quick Google for "startup programs" will find you lots more.
