Problem to connect camera via firewire
I am facing a prob. to connect my handycam (sony) with computer via firewire port. About two years ago I bought a compaq machine with inbuilt firewire facility. But when I go to connect through a firewire cable... the connection not supported. Then I also connect usb cable. Now the camera connect with computer. Last Year I bought a amd athlon machine.... bought a firewire card.... fix it... connect only firewire cable between camera and machine... and it worked rightly... no usb cable required. Now few days ago i bought a core 2 duo machine.. nvidia geforce7100/nvidianforce630i, E4500, 2.20 ghz and remove the firewire card from athlon machine and fix it in new machine. The same problem arives. It requires both usb and firewire cable to connect between machine and camere.
Why this problem occurs? What can I do now to solve the prob.? kindly suggest.

We know the firewire card worked in the Athlon computer and so it should work in the new one. There are no special drivers required - firewire support is built into Windows. Perhaps the card is not seated correctly in the motherboard, try taking it out and putting it back in again.
Double check the cable to make sure it hasn't got damaged in some way.
Check the Windows Device Manager in Control Panel to make sure the firewire card has been detected by your computer.

Also bear in mind that Sony does not call it a IEEE1394. They call it iLink. So if you're looking for Firewire or IEEE1394 port on your Sony, you will not find it labeled as such...sjj1805 wrote:Some do and some don't. Mine doesn't I have to use an IEEE1394 Cable.

Right... USB is not meant to transfer DV video files, iLink (firewire) is. The USB ports on Mini-DV camcorders or Digital-8 camcorders are there for the purpose of transferring photographs.
I've never heard of a camcorder that required both USB and Firewire to be connected to transfer video. Check you camcorder's manual to see if there is a setting in the camcorder that can be or should be changed. It should be able to utilize the iLink (firewire) alone, and the USB alone.
Some PCs and NLE's (non-linear editing) will need the camcorder turned on, and switched to playback mode before they see the firewire. Most of the time once you plug the cable into your PC, your OS (windows) will see it, and pop up a message along with an audible alert. Is this happening with you?
