Can't burn to Blu-ray disc from VS 11.5+

Post by mmarkowi »

Hi, I'm new to the forum. My computer settings are as follows:

Intel® Core™2 Q6600 Quad-Core (8MB L2 cache,2.4GHz,1066FSB)
3GB Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz - 4 DIMMs
512 MB DDR3 nVidia® GeForce® 8800 GT
1 TB hard drive

OS: vista home premium

I have a sony hd sr-11 and have tried to burn some wedding videos--with no luck. This is an avchd camera that I am importing m2ts files to my hard drive. I am able to covert the project (28gb in size) to a video file after using create disc>create video file. The problem occurs when trying to burn a 50gb bd-re.
The process locks up in the video/audio multiplexing stage just after formatting of disc. I have tried to import the mpeg2 finished file into Roxio 9 and Nero 8 and neither can burn the discs.

I have successfully been able to burn 1gb short test versions of the project files to the 50gb disc, and it plays fine on a ps3. The full 28gb file never can make it to disc--windows just shuts down and shows a message about an unexpected shut down.

I took the computer back to factory settings--ugh. Same problem. The project is just the m2ts files and some wav files.

I know the burning works as it burns smaller video files fine.

It can't be compatability as the problem occurred with only Roxio (factory default) and VS on the computer.

VS is up to date with all of the patches/hot fix. Direct X is 10.

I would settle to edit in VS and burn in something else, but something is preventing this video file from burning. It play great on the computer.

Should I make several small video files (divide my project up)? I was hoping to get 1 video (like a fluid movie, not have to have the watchers go through more menus just to complete more of the wedding video)

I'm at work now, so I'm not on the home computer. Any other settings questions I will try to answer from memory, or after I get home.

Sorry for being long winded, I'm just exhausted and distressed.

Thanks,

BM

I am afraid you are probably far more advanced than most of us, given that you actually have a Blu-Ray burner AND disc! Personally, I have only reached the stage of burning an AVCHD hybrid XDVD on a standard DVD blank, and then playing it back in the PlayStation which I only bought yesterday! So I am not sure there are going to be many people who can make suggestions about the actual Blu-Ray burning process. Personally, though, I would -- as another Quad owner -- have thought your computer well up to the job.

I did find in my first experiment last night, though, that the process failed at the end because I had selected too high a burn speed -- or at least forgot to change the burn speed in VS (since I normally don't burn my projects using VS). When I reduced the speed, in this case to 2x just to be safe, it burned (and played back) fine. But of course this was a much smaller project (4.2GB) and a standard DVD. I confess I have no idea about the burn speed situation with Blu-Ray discs.

However, a possible work-around, for your idea of breaking up the project could be covered as follows, since I think VS would follow its same menu rules for Blu-Ray as it does for other types of discs. And that is, in the second icon in the bottom left of the burning screen, to make sure, at the very bottom of the dialogue box, that 'Continue to play the next clip' is selected. In practice, this means that there is usually a slight pause for a second (at most 2), as one clip ends and the next starts, with the screen dark IIRC. So if you make your breaks at logical spots, change of scene etc, as the video moves from clip to clip, it should resemble a continuous video with breaks which will resemble transitions. In other words, continuity should be maintained.

Thanks for responding.

I have the burn speed at 1x. The discs only support 1x and 2x. I will have to try to break it up. I guess the weird thing is that it hangs up no matter what program I use to burn---NERO, ROXIO, VS. But there is no hitch in converting to video and no problem burning small versions of the project. I will give that a try--perhaps over the weekend--and post-back.

Thanks
