Motion Menu Not On Final Output Disk

Post by BIG_John »

Hi. I don't know exactly what version I am using... I can't seem to find it anywhere... even on the original disk which came with EasyCap USB video capturing device. I only know that the accompanying disk included Ulead "Video Studio SE DVD", which I am using. When I first experimented with the Ulead software I created a DVD from a series of old .mpg files and loved the resulting thumbnail motion menu that was created. Although I seemed somehow to create that menu effect on a final DVD quite accidentally the first time, I have yet to be able to do it again! I get to the screen that has the correct thumbnail menu for the DVD I am creating displayed on the right side, and I am then able to edit the text on the menu. However, in the final DVD created, a simple motion menu of the 1st part of the DVD is all that appears. To summarize what I'm doing... I put a series of .mpgs in the time line of the video studio, select "create disc", "Add/edit chapters" (create menu is checked, use first clip as into video is unchecked), "auto add chapters". Then I select the thumbnail menu, and the appropriate "currently displayed menu" for the project under the large sample on the right. Next I edit the menu text, and customize the menu with motion, menu background music, duration, etc. under "edit". The next step is the burning menu.
It appears that everything is in order to apply the menu I have created to the final disc, however the result is a one image motion menu (1/1) of the first scene with the background music.
What am I doing wrong? Am I missing a box to check or some other as aspect of creating the thumbnail motion menu?

Welcome John
To determine what version of VS you are using click on the HELP MENU (the ? to right of screen) and then select About VideoStudio. If you have an SE version I am guessing it is version 10 or maybe 9 (the SE stands for Special Edition which is sometimes a slightly cut down version).
From what I can determine from your description is that you have created a DVD with TWO menus a main menu and a sub menu (chapters). The main menu contains thumbnails for each SEPARATE rendered movie (in your case ONE) and the sub menu displays thumbnails for the CHAPTERS points you created for each of the SEPARATE rendered movies (in your case you have only ONE). When you click on a selection on the main menu you should then see the sub menu.
You should be able to preview this before you actually burn the DVD by PREVIEWING where you simulate a DVD remote control this happens automatically in version 9 when Creating Disk when you select NEXT after editing your chapter points. In version 10 you have to click on the icon which looks like a DVD remote control.

Don't do it that way.

If the mpegs are complete, that is you are not going to edit further.

From a new project Share Create Disc--Add Video--add your Mpegs.

This will create a thumbnail/link for each video in the main menu page.( these are the main titles)
You can add further chapters if required to each title, but you may find what you have is sufficient.

To find your version number, click on the ? up in the right hand top corner. Then select About Ulead Video Studio. But if you managed to get a motion menu, I would suspect it would have to be VS10 SE as I think that may have been the first to have motion menus. However, it just might have been VS9...

Thank you for your help! Following John a's explaination of the menu setup I had created, I took another look at the disc. I was not aware that the the title next to the main menu motion clip was in fact the link to the thumbnails I was looking for! (I thought it was just a title!...Duh!). And now that I think about it, that first DVD that I "accidentally" created with the motion thumbnails was in fact set up as outlined by Trevor. My goal is now to create a motion thumbnail main menu from a single large mpg that has had chapters added. I'm hoping this is in fact possible! Anyway, now that I have a further understanding of creating menus I can experiment further. Thanks again!

p.s. Turns out it is in fact version 10...Thanks John and Ken for helping me find that ever-elusive "?" !!!!!

Regards,

John

I was not 'recommending' that to create a DVD you add the MPGs to the timeline of a project merely using (Big) John's example of what he was doing although in retrospect I should have pointed that out - I just didn't want to make the description more complex for a 'first timer' than necessary.
Good point though.
