VS11+ (System "locks up")
I have a 28 min DVD almost ready for burning but whenever I try to alter anything the whole thing locks up and I have to Crt Alt Delete. Any ideas. I have hundreds of Gigs of hard drive and 2 GIG RAM. Am using VS11+

What format are your original files? (The more-compressed formats tend to be troublesome...)
The READ THIS FIRST... post at the top of the forum tells you what we need to know in order to help you. (This problem probably has nothing to do with your hardware.)

Describe your problem: system locks up when I try to make changes.
Properties of your source files (format, file size, where did you get it?): mpeg file format and jpegs; taken from my video camera
What devices are involved and their mode of connection?: video camera used to capture video
Project Properties (important): 25.2mb
Output format (file, DVD, VCD, SVCD): DVD
PAL or NTSC: PAL
Error Codes (if any): No error codes. It just locks yp and I have to Crt/Alt/Delete.
Product Version: e.g. VS10 or VS11+ : VS11+
Never had this before.

G'day Libby
With regards to Project Properties: with you project in the time line go to the File Menu and select Project Properties.
Again with Video Properties...with your project in the time line right click one of your video files and that will tell you what kind of video it is.
Both Project & Video Properties should match and preferably all the videos in the time line should be the same.
If they are not it increases the chances of problems occuring.

Thanks Clevo. Project properties = 25.2mb. Video properties = PAL DVD, Mpeg 2 video, lower field first. All seems compatible. The only change I made recently was to split the audio so I could remove noise and amplify.

25.2mb is not the project properties. Please go to File>Project Properties and copy everything here. Do the same for your clip properties (right click on a clip to get the info).

Locking up
I'm sorry I do not understand what you mean by "copy everything". I go to FILE, PROJECT PROPERTIES, then what?

When you select File > Properties, at the bottom of the dialogue box which appears there is a window with several lines of prints along the lines of:
"PAL (25 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 576, 25 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-PAL), 16:9
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 8000 kbps)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo"
To copy the above here, I simply selected all those lines, then selected Ctrl+C (to copy them) then came back here and pressed Ctrl+V to Paste them.
You do the same to post the Properties of individual files by right clicking on one of them either in the timeline or in the Library window, and then selecting Properties.

Hope this helps uncover the problem.

BUT I can't do the individual file bit that you mention. It just comes up with a grey box of information that I can't select.

OK... There's nothing "obviously wrong" with your MPEG file format. But, for some reason Video Studio does not "like it", and some MPEG files do seem to cause trouble.... I assume your MPEG file plays OK with Windows Media player?
There are a couple of things you can try...
- First, if you have a MiniDV camera re-capture in AVI/DV format. That should solve your problem. (If you have a hard-drive camera, or a direct-to-DVD camera, you are stuck with MPEG.)
- If you are stuck with MPEG, you can try re-encoding the file with SUPER (FREE!!!). Select MPEG-II with the the same (PAL compatible) settings as you have now*, but use a slightly lower bitrate (maybe 7800kbps). I'm not sure if a lower bitrate is required, but a lower bitrate will force it to re-encode.
My solution to "problem-MPEGs" was to buy a special-purpose MPEG editor from Womble. If I edit (and re-save/re-encode) the file with Womble, I can use Corel/Ulead to make the DVD.
Another special-purpose MPEG editor is VideoReDo. I'm not sure if VideoReDo can re-encode the MPEG (so you might have to use it along with SUPER).
And, Womble and VideoReDo both have "MPEG repair" tools might be able to "fix" your file so that it works with Video Studio.
* You'll have to choose a different audio format. SUPER does not have an LPCM audio option. You can (as a separate step) use SUPER to strip-out the audio to A WAV file (which is actually LPCM), and then you can re-import that WAV audio into Video Studio... but that's probably too much trouble for a project that's already getting difficult...

libby,
Were you having any problems prior to splitting the audio and applying the two filters? Also, are you applying the filters to all 28 minutes of audio? If so, this may be the reason why your system appears to freeze up. Try going the Share, Create Sound File. Then delete the voice & music tracks and insert the audio file into the timeline. If that doesn't fix things for you, press CTRL+Z until you get back your audio/music tracks. The only change I made recently was to split the audio so I could remove noise and amplify.
