Cannot start the capture graph.

Post by MikeB51 »

Hi Team.
I'm suddenly getting the error "Cannot start the capture graph" as soon as I try to capture from my mini-dv camera. I've uninstalled and reinstalled UVS 11.5 but still getting the same message. Can anyone please offer advice. I don't even understand what the error means. :-)

Can we assume you are using Firewire and that nothing else has changed on your computer?

MikeB51,

Not to be snobby but did you do a search for "Cannot start the capture graph"? Others have already posted the same question and perhaps the answer for you is already there. BTW, search for ALL keywords.

I did a search in VS forum but didn't get anything, I'll try again, I'm probably not holding my mouth right.

I know that sometimes getting the results from a search that you want can be frustrating at times! Who wants to read through 500 posts!

I did as you said and got results, thanks. I've tried changing the start order and it made no difference. I just don't understand why it's worked perfectly all this time. Just computers I guess.

Ken I've uninstalled and reinstalled my firewire card and tried different orders of startup. When I click on Capture Video the camera starts to play but I get the error message and nothing is captured.

Have you tried capturing to DV format via firewire using Windows Movie Maker? If you have a problem there, then the problem is wider than Video Studio. It could be hardware -- though I note the playing about with the firewire card that you have done. Have you another firewire cable you can test it with? Have you a friend with firewire that you can test the camera with (as the camera firewire jack might be defective)?

Were you actually capturing from a mini DV tape or using the DV camera as a passthrough device? If the latter, check under ? > About Video Studio that your version number is 11.5.0157.2. If it does not end in 2, then you haven't applied the 6 November 2007 update patch which corrects capture via firewire with the DV camera being used as a passthrough device...

Ken I downloaded Windv and it all works fine on that. I'm capturing from the dv tape. I downloaded and installed the patch and the version ends in a 2.

Well the only other thing I can think of is to go to the Microsoft DirectX website and install the March 2008 update patch for your DirectX. It is not included in automatic Windows updates, so you have to do it manually.

If that doesn't work, then at least you have a work-around with WinDV -- which I use anyway! (I admit, however, that I don't use it because I can't get VS11.5 to work!!!)
