quality : windvd 9 + blu ray

Is it possible to obtain a blu ray picture , on pc (with a very good card video) so nice as on a platinum blu ray of living room.

Check AVS forum. It seems like I have read thoughts on such comparisons, but no actual comparisons. I got the sense that the blu-ray component was not better significantly, if at all, than a PC.

The advantage of the PC route is that I can watch a movie while doing other things. Also about 1/2 the cost.

EDIT: Another major advantage was that WinDVD9 makes my regular DVDs look pretty nice on my 28" monitor.

the comparaison seems difficult for me, because i would like to use a 42" lcd.
a very good platine blu ray of living room (panasonic dmp b10) costs 500£á .. Why ? .. normaly, it is logical, the picture would be better..
my problem : if i buy this platine, and i d'ont see difference betwen pc, i will lose 500£á

Try to find someone who has a component player that you can borrow / or encourage him/her to help you run a comparison test. Make it sound exciting...

Part of the difference in cost is that, other than the tracking electronics, there's very little in a computer DVD player. It's the power supply, cpu, and the work done in the video card and software program that has to be replicated in the stand-alone component player. Decoding, plus horsepower.

It can be tricky in a computer in pairing a vid card and a monitor, to get HDCP that works for Blu Ray. And then find a fit with a software program. And understand how to get the DVD drive to do what you want.

The components are great for non computer literate folk, or just for folk that choose to go that way. I went via computer because: half the cost, and I can do other things, and (at least with WinDVD9) it makes my regular DVDs look great. I am a cheapskate and a geek, and this was/is a fun way for me.

BUT NO SOLUTION IS A PERFECT ONE THAT WILL WORK IN ALL SITUATIONS. - anything has foibles. It is a TOY! Have fun with whatever you get!!!

Very intressting your experience.

I've already read dvd on my pc with windvd 9 trial, and I noticed a better picture than on a very good compnent dvd player, I've bought on 2004.

I think, I'll continue diffrent tests, to have my proper opinion for blu ray.

What is sur : the real advantages we have on pc, in comparison with a compnent player.

To me, the big advantages of having it on a computer are
Price (since I already have a computer that's HDCP compatable)

and

I can do other things while viewing a movie. Even watching a movie for the first time, there are always boring parts, for me, and, on a computer, I can always flick up FireFox or TBird and check things, if I so choose. I am rarely totally captivated by any movie.

Also with a component, I would have to have an external "receiver" to decode the audio and separate speakers to drive with that receiver. With the computer, I use the WinDVD9br software to decode the Dolby or DTS and the onboard Realtek 885 to put it to my 5.1 Logitech speakers. (Z540 I think) 24bit. I also have an Audigy SE 7.1, but I get slow "WOW" on NWN game, so I went back to the onboard Realtek High def chip.

I would like to find an audio card, witch can be connected to my external amplifier, into cinch 5.1 grips.

I precise, I would like that pc includes the decoder and not the amplifier.

If it is possible, It's a real solution to decode hd audio , without buying an expensive amplifier (1500£á) witch intergrated decoders with using hdmi grips.

In general, I do not believe computer audio cards decode Dolby or DTS. That is the job of the software and it is a specially licensed part of the software. In other words, part of the cost of a piece of software like WinDVD9br is going to cover the licensing of the software decoders for Dolby and DTS. The sound card merely catches this 5.1 or 7.1 and splits it to the low level outputs on the back of the card, OR simply passes through spdif (Sony/Philips digital interface) which is connected to a receiver either via an optical or coax (RCA) cable, and the receiver does the decoding.

The reason the Cyberlink oem cd is included with some computer drives is that it is inexpensive - NO Dolby or DTS decoders! 2 channel only!

The low level outputs on the back of the card, going to the speakers, either go to a specialized set of amplifiers, or to "computer speakers" which have their own built in set of amplifiers.

There are rare, expensive , sound cards, like

which looks like it might take spdif in (from, say, a component DVD player), and then put the split output out to the low level speaker outputs. BUT I DON'T KNOW if this card actually does that, and how it would work.

I am cursed with good ears... A number of years ago I was interested in mid to high end hi-fi. I had Krells and Snells. (and acoustats)(and a mod squad McCormick)

Then I got more into computers. I got an expensive audio card for my computer and a couple of mid end receivers. It used about 90% of my cpu. I told them they should shoot their driver programmer. The sales rep tried to tell me that if I was really interested in good sound, I'd keep it. Much BS!!! Last year I wandered into a high end shop here in Boston and none had any sound stage until they were above $500,000 and were basically overgrown home theater setups. More BS!!!

So, since I have gotten used to 5.1 surround sound from DVDs, I found the little Logitech X-540 speaker system works very well in my little apartment. (at some point I'll upgrade to G51 or Z-5500 or something) If I want to listen to the classical station, I can pipe that into my sound card (stereo), but there are just too many ads for me - I'll listen to a beautiful piece of music and then discover that I've been listening to ads for 10 minutes. bah!!!

So I have become a lot less knowledgeable on the high end of computer sound cards - especially since lowly Realtec (the built in audio codec chip on many motherboards) is now 24 bit.

Nonetheless, I am a geek and wanted MORE!!!!! so got the 28" monitor which is HDCP compatable with my 8600 video card and then, of course, the next want was blu-ray, which I now have.

Toys are an adiction, as is great audio sound, and super clear video picture. There is no real end! But hopefully a lot of fun and good viewing and listening along the way.

The AVS forums are dedicated to folks interested in that. I used their thread on the OnAir GT HDTV USB 5.1 receiver, when I needed it. I do not know if they have a thread on WinDVD9, though they certainly should.

I am not a WinDVD9 sales person or tech person, just a lowly individual who happens to be an opsys geek. If I have helped, that's great!!!!!!!
