I got an email Friday (opened it today) stating that VS11.5+ is currently on sale for $59 for the FULL version till midnight tonight. (Directly from Corel)
(A sign that VS12 is close?)
Few questions:
1- Delivery method: Any reason to get the hard copy over the digital download? (shipping is free during the sale)
2- UPGRADE, how much (generally) have the upgrades been at time of release? I would like to get my hands on VS11.5+ now at this price if the upgrade price (to VS12+) still makes sense.
3- Any reason to simply be patient and just wait for VS12+?
4- WinDVD8 isn't mentioned as included on the order page... would they exclude it?

1. I don't have the hard copy of VS11.11.5+. But in the past, the advantage is that it contains a Repair feature that the downloaded versions don't. And this means you don't have to do a full uninstall/reinstall should the need arise.
2. Upgrades have been around the sort of price you say Corel is now asking for the full version. So it is a good price if you don't have a previous version of VS you could upgrade from. We have no idea what the upgrade price to VS12 might be, but it may be around the same sort of level.
In the past, concessions have been made to people who have bought one version, only to have the next version released a short time later. It's impossible to put a figure on how short the time must be, but if I recall correctly, it has been up to a month in some cases. Since we have absolutely no idea when VS12 is to be released, I would not pin my hopes on buying VS11.5+ now in the hope of then getting a free upgrade to VS12 'in a short time'!
3. It depends what you are using now... I am quite a few others have found VS11/11.5+ a pretty stable, usable program. Others have not. But it has been that way as far as I can recall for every version I have used since VS7. VS12 is said to contain a number of quantum advances on the current version. I hope so. But I will reserve judgment until I can actually get my hands on it.
4. WinDVD 8 is normally contained in the second disc. Since that disc also contains files essential to the operation of VS, I assume they will be selling the full two discs. In that case, you will get WinDVD. Note, however, that it is not the top version -- silver, I believe, not whatever the top one is called (gold? platinum?).

Thanks so much for taking your time to explain, Ken.
Thanks again.
How exactly would they handle that 2nd disc in the case of the downloadable version? Just curious.Ken Berry wrote: WinDVD 8 is normally contained in the second disc. If you get the disc versions everything is split across two discs.
if you opt for the download versions you get one relatively small file containing the basic program and then you get additional download files for the content and extras including WinDVD.
The only differences between download and "boxed" are
1. No printed manual with download - though you do get a copy in PDF format.
2. No "Repair" option with download. That has never been a problem for me.

Excellent, thanks for the help guys.
Ken, you mentioned what I'm using now... well, nothing. Not to burn DVD's anyway.
I've been using VideoReDo for editing MPEG's that my PVR produces.
I had tried the VS11+ demo a month or two ago and really liked the way it allowed for DVD menu customization.
I would have made the purchase back then but word of VS12 had just surfaced so I figured I'd wait.
I figure at $60 now, even if the upgrade to VS12+ is as much as $70, I should be on par cash-wish when everything is said and bought for and I can get back to burning DVD's now instead of waiting.
VideoReDo is nice but has trouble with DL-DVD and it lacks in DVD menu customization. The DL problem will be fixed but I have a feeling the current DVD menu style will remain.
Thanks yet again, fellas.

Got the same email, but not tempted. Gonna wait for 12. As to discs vs. download, I've always opted for the discs. The discs come in handy when you have to do a reinstall or repair (something I've had to do too many times!). One reason why I hesitated to get the 11.5 upgrade was that there was no disc option for upgrades. Then, when version 12 seems to be around the corner, I've decided to just wait for it.
