lost project, file format problem

Post by John Kerr »

Just downloaded upgrade 11.5 plus video studeo. Worked on project about 10 times and always opened with no trouble using mpeg 2 clips and bmp photos extracted from video. Now cannot open because i get a message 'unusual file format not recognised'. I'm new to forums so can anyone advise if I can recover project.

I've had this happen when I've altered/re-sized a still image in Photoshop that is part of the "project", after I had first inserted it into the project. Not sure if that's what has happened in your case.

Thanks That is what I think has happened but after deleting the bmp photos from the hard drive I still cannot recover the project. I never had any problems with 11plus maybe this is because I upgraded to 11.5. I still need to recover project, regards

Hi John

When you get the warning message does it indicate which file its referring to?

project loss

Post by John Kerr »

thanks no it does not say. It always stops at 60 percent and the mouse freezes so I have to do cntrl, alt, del, to get back to desktop. no clips appear and yet all the individual clips are there and can be used, It also says to wait and I have waited up to 2 hours and nothing happens. Regards John

Hi

So VS goes part way to opening a project, reading the various files, then freezes.

Sounds like a corrupt file. If it is you just need to locate it.

Are the files used in the timelines located in the same folder (on the hard drive)

If yes, rename the folder, this will force a re-link, but by selecting NO will load the project ( I think)(unless it freezes again.)
Another route would be to rename each file in turn. (its just a lot of work)

You would be able to select each file in turn and re-link.

Before you start, copy the VSP on the hard drive, at least you¡¦ll have the original to fall back on.

Hi Trevor, thanks again. I have tried all you suggest. each time the sane message file format not recognised and ulead hangs up. I may have to start all over again but it was about 20 hours work,, I did not rename the upd files as presumably only the mpeg ones regards John

Hi John

A bit surprised that the process did not work.
As Video Studio loads a project it seems to read each clip used in turn.

You can usually see the blue progress bar and identify the file names, if you¡¦re a quick reader.
As VS cannot find the files I assumed it would not identify a ¡¥format not recognised¡¦ and ultimately load the project but first require a re-link. From here you select ¡¥Cancel¡¦ and the project is loaded but shows the clips as Black and White. (not linked)

Sorry that did not work, I think you may have to start over again.

You could try un-ticking ¡¥re-link checking¡¦ from File Preferences.
Just a long shot.
Reselect after your done.
