High Definition formats - which one?

Post by ruggy1 »

I am about to plunge into the world of high definition video cameras. But the options are so vast I need help. For instance, Sony has now discounted their high definition hc5 MiniDV camcorder to around $600 here. Other options are, disc based, DVD disc based or RAM based camcorders. With my current lowly Canon miniDV camcorder, raw (AVI) is about 13GB per hour of filming, but at least I can edit it easily. Do these other types of recordings have raw video, or do they compress on-the-fly to some sort of MPEG2 format I will have difficulty with later. I am leaning towards the Sony, even though the tapes are $30 each, although this type of recording appears to be going out of fashion. How does MF and VS handle all these different formats? Thanking you all in advance for your input.
MF2, MF3, MF4, MF5, VS7, VS10+, VS12, Nero Vision Express. Ricoh and Sony 16x DVD recorder, Sony HC5 High def camera. Also Canopus ADVC110 for AV/DV input through firewire

From the lack of response I assume that the questions I ask are so dumb that everyone knows the answers except me. The only other alternative is that this is the wrong place to pose such questions - if so, can anyone point me in the right direction? Many Thanks
