With VideoStudio version 6, I could hear the audio of PAL clips compressed with DV type 1 from a Panasonic NV-MX500 digital camera (but, to my surprise, only selecting the "mute" option for that clip). The audio of the project played OK, after "unmuting" the clips.
I have upgraded from version 6 to 8 and I found that the trick doesn't work any more: I can't hear the audio of any clip compressed with DV-1, but if I run the project it sounds OK.
This bug complicates a lot the process of editing, and I would like to know if there is anything I could do other than recompressing the files from type 1 to type 2 using the VideoStudio version 6 (fortunately, I didn`t uninstall it).
No audio with DV Type 1 clips

What type of sound card is in your machine?
What audio control panel are you using to control
the soundcard?
Do the Type 1 files play in windows media player? (Not the project).
Sounds like your volume control or wave(pcm) volume slider(s) may
be Muting.
Also check to make sure the dv(avi) files audio properties are correct.
If the tape is recorded at 16bit 48khz then the file should also have
the same properties. If the file(clip) is different then there is something
wrong. Usually this occurs when you start recording from the absolute
start of the DV tape. The wrong audio parameters are recorded into the
avi file. Forward the tape approx 10 seconds into the video then hit record
as the tape is playing and see if the audio properties are correct.
Right Click on the video clip and select "Properties". Then read the
audio properties. It should NOT say 16bit 32khz or 12bit 48khz.
It should say whatever the tape was recorded at:
either 12bit 32khz or 16bit 48khz.
It's possible the project properties are correcting the audio that was
recorded (interpreted incorrectly) wrong.
Also, open up the Mixer(s) control panel and keep it open. When usisng
VS hit <ALT + TAB> to access the mixer. <ALT + TAB> lets you cycle
through the programs in windows that are open.

Not audio properties
Thanks for your suggestions, but unfortunately that is not the problem.
I am using a Hercules Fortissimo with its audio control panel, and everything is checked correctly. Windows Media Player doesn't play the sound (it searches for a codec but doesn't find it). Quicktime plays it fine. Soundforge 7 also identifies the audio stream as DV-1 48KHz Stereo, and plays it OK. I have recompressed a clip with the Mainconcept DV-1 codec and the problem remains, so I think that somehow VS8 has some problem with DV-1 codecs.
Thanks
Julio

Do you have more than one DV codec installed? Do you know which codec handles your audio? Try running Sherlock 2.0 to see if your codecs are broken.
