Getting Video In To Video Studio... How?

Post by Robert Barnett »

Ok, I have some test fottage in MTS format on an SD card from a Panasonic SD9. How to do I get this video footage in to Video Studio? When I try to insert a video it won't touch the MTS file.

Robert,

Do you mean straight from the SD card? If so then probably not, although VS does recognize AVCHD (which is what .mts is). Does your camera have a firewire connection? If so, go straight into your computer via firewire. From what I've been reading (and I think Ken will back me up on this), you're probably better off using WinDV to capture your video. It's free, small, and does (only) captures extremely well.

Sorry Ron, but that camera records to SD card and doesn't have firewire. It connects to the computer via mini USB cable, and as far as I am aware, the computer should see it as just another drive. You transfer the video files to your hard disk as you would any other file. And I am surprised that VS cannot see them in that format.

Robert: what version of VS are you using? In any case, to deal with AVCHD properly, you will need VS11.5+ (i.e. VS11+ fully updated) AND a fairly powerful computer (Core 2 Duo or above).

egads! Is firewire becoming obsolete? Sorry for the confusion!
Thanks Ken for setting me straight, but I'm sure you still agree that WinDV is great.

Importing Video

Post by Robert Barnett »

Yes, it is an SD flash card camera.

I downloaded the latest trial version which I am going to assume is the 11.5 plus. When I look at the format options for the import dialog box I see only a few video formats supported no MTS.

Part of the point of the flash memory camcorders is so that one doesn't haven't "capture" the video. It is also captured in files.

I have seen others on other forums mentioning this product as being very good for the camera as well as for the Canon HF-100 which is the camera I ordered. However, it too does MTS files.

If Video Studio isn't going to read the files then that was a very poor choice by Ulead/Corel. The Canon and I believe the Panasonic requires the AC adapter being powering the camera before you can transfer video.

Version

Post by Robert Barnett »

The other thing that bothers me is that on the Ulead site right next to the VideoStudio 11.5 Plus there is a try link to download the demo. The demo is 140MB and is what I installed. However, when I go in to the about dialog box is shows version 11.0.0157.0 Plus.

So thinking Corel can't get their act together and would rather make people think that 11.5 plus is junk by having the download the trial for the old version I downloaded updates.

None of the updates will install they tell me they can't find 11 plus. So I have no idea what is going on. I do know apparently Corel can't get their trials act together.

Ah! The trial version in fact is NOT VS11.5+. It is only VS11+. Corel have never updated the trial version, and the Power Pack add-on which upgrades it to 11.5+ will not work on the trial version. So that is why it is not reading your files.

The only thing I can suggest is that you buy or upgrade to the full version, get it up to VS11.5+ and try it out. I am 99.9% sure you will have no trouble once you do that. But if you do, then Corel has a 60 day refund policy if not satisfied.

Robert,

As Ken said
It connects to the computer via mini USB cable, and as far as I am aware, the computer should see it as just another drive.
So try this (not sure if you need 11+ or 11.5+):

Go to File -> Insert Media File to Timeline -> Insert DVD/DVD-VR or AVCHD and choose your "drive" with the video files on it.

Importing

Post by Robert Barnett »

Well, the File > Insert... thing came close, however the program just hangs and never enables the import button. It does however find the file and list it in the dialog box, but when you select it the program locks and that is the end.

I have to say that Corel/Ulead have a lot of nerve putting a try it or demo link for a version that you can actually try out.

I have no intentions of buying it only to have to return it. If Corel/Ulead can't get their act together then they will get no money from me. I will simply look else were for my video editing needs. A company that works like this doesn't deserve and has not earned my money or my business.

Robert,

Corel does have a 30-day money-back guarantee. See it at their store.

Money Back

Post by Robert Barnett »

I am aware of that. However, I shouldn't have to buy a product only to end up having to return it. I should be able to download a demo, see if it supports everything I want and then buy it.

If Corel/Ulead thinks that people should use the 30-day money back guarantee, pay for all of the shipping (I don't purchase online download products), and all of the hassle of that instead of a demo they are out of their mind and that is just another reason why they don't and won't get my business or money.

It is a shame from what I have read from others this could very well be the product I am looking for. But, no demo no buy!
