Vista Ultimate tweaks? New system

Post by westlight »

Editing AVCHD with VS11 Plus with all updates.

Are there any system tweaks/changes that anyone might suggest for a new system running Vista Ultimate? I've been using Windows XP SP2 up until now. I've not made any adjustments so far, and not sure if I need to.

I'm sure there are many differing opinions but please keep in mind I'm not a PC tech so simple is better.

Thanks!

Like you, I have a Quad 6600 computer with similar specs for other equipment (different graphics but, unlike you, no Blu-Ray burner   ) Also running Vista Ultimate. I made absolutely no tweaks to the computer, to Vista or to VS11.5+ to get them all to run happily together. (Assume you mean 11.5+ when you say 'VS11+ with all updates'.) And I have no trouble editing or producing new AVCHD files -- without SmartProxy enabled.

Assume you have also updated DirectX 10. Though the computer may be new, it would be using the original DirectX that comes with the Vista installation disk. And DirectX is not updated automatically in the Vista auto updates. You have to do it manually.

Thanks also for updating your System button.

I don't know if you have Ultimate Upgrade or full version, but if you have the 64 bit disk then you should trash the 32 bit version and move up. There are several advantages in using the 64 bit version, one of them being increased memory abilities. I now have 8 gig ram with no page file and it seems to work faster.

Ultimate also has the ability to run DYNAMIC disks (a kind of quick and easy software type RAID) which allows you to span multiple disks and create one large partition over a number of drives.... great for working with uncompressed files (an hour of uncompressed HD avi is about 700gigs). I *THINK* ultimate 32 has this ability too, but it's quite a bit more restrictive. There are a few other little goodies.... but you get the idea. There is no real advantage to ultimate 32 over xp and no real tweeks to offer, but if you can move over to the 64 bit version then it would be well worth it.

I'm running Vista Home premium 64 bit....I have made no tweaks to Vista and VS11.5+ is running happily along...except for the occasional " Vs has stopped working" crash after I exit the program....this little bug seems to not affect files in anyway

Re neonbob's ref to 64 bit: VS11/11.5+ was not written to take advantage of 64 bit. However, it is to be hoped that VS12 will....
