I had an issue last night where DVDWS spat at me and said "out of memory" the only way to get out of it was, not to hit OK, but to shut down the process in taskmanager.
I saw that DVDWS was using over 1.8 GB yes giiiigaaaaa byyyyytes of RAM this was out of 2.5 GB of ram. I know photoshop 5 is funky with ram and you have to set its settings to like 25 % to keep it from crashing. Anyone know of a tweak for DVDWS?
After restarting the app. I noticed it slowly climbs from 50 to 53 then 80, 90, 125, etc. this only seems to happen when I check the finished menu system in the finish tab and play it back to confirm everything is running as it should. I stopped for the last time at 333MB or ram utilization.
I will check my swapfile to see if this helps at all and post an update.

Memory problem
All of my crashes, freeze-ups, and other "weird" problems have been caused by corrupt video files. Often, the "bad" file will play back OK, but cause trouble when you try to edit or recode/convert it (so this problem can be hard to diagnose).
What format are your video files? Where did they come from? Is it possible to re-capture in a different format? Did you edit the files?
In my case, the problem files were MPEG-2. But, the more-compressed formats seem to cause even more trouble.
