Hopefully the subject line says it all. I have a new PC system being built with a Blu-Ray burner but with the cost of a Blu-Ray disk I'm looking for an alternative. I would like to play the DVD, in High Def, on a PlayStation 3. I thought I've read where this is possible but I'm not having any luck.
I'm shooting with a Canon HG10 and using VS 11+ with all updates. I've edited several clips and have a 35 min. movie which has been rendered to an mpeg 2 and I've also created a DVD folder and burnt several standard DVD disks from that mpeg. They play fine on my DVD player.
So, I tried.. Share>Create Disk>HD DVD>selected the mpeg file, made adjustments in the Gear Options (Upper Field First, etc..) added two chapters then burned a standard DVD. I inserted the new disk into PlayStation 3 and got this message when I clicked on the video Icon. "HV_DVD, then get "There are no No Titles". It won't play.
What am I missing?

I preface this by saying I have not tried this personally. However, our resident high def guru, etech6355 -- who sadly has been unable to participate in the Board for the past month -- has commented on more than one occasion that he had difficulty getting VS11.5+ to work properly in producing a high def disc using a standard DVD blank when he actually converted his high def AVCHD project into a new high def mpeg-2 file. He found that doing so, and then inserting that new file in the burning module, produced a disc which his own PSP3 had difficulty with. He commented that Movie Factory 6 with all patches does it correctly.
However, he has found that VS11.5 will do it just as well as MF6 if, after you finish editing the project in the VS11.5 editing module, you *don't* render a new mpeg-2. Instead you should jump straight to the burning module which should automatically insert the *project* file into the burning timeline. In other words, the conversion is done during the burning process itself. This of course goes against our recommended workflow for standard definition DVDs. But etech swears it works fine this way and the result on the Play Station is excellent.
However, as a final note, he also commented that you have to actually burn a disc for this format. You cannot first 'burn' an disc image .iso file or DVD folder.

Thanks Ken,
I did a bit more research and it seems from what I've read online, info which may be out of date, PS3 does not support HD DVD playback. Perhaps that does not apply to HD burnt to a "standard" dvd. A bit confusing.
I'll give your/etech's method of burning direct from a project a try. I'm picking up a new custom built Quad Core system today and will update my systems profile.
There was a reference to a post by etech regarding his experience with HD editing with a Quad Core but I didn't find it, and perhaps do not know how to search for it correctly. I'll also be working with Vista for the first time which should be interesting. I didn't know if there is something I should be aware of with editing HD with the Quad Core or if this was just a general reference of sorts. Here is the thread and the reference to it by 2Dogs.

PS3 and VS11 +
Hi westlight,
Hope this will help. I bought the PS3 mainly for playing my HD videos rendered from VS 11 + taken with my Sony HR-7 HD Handycam. I do not play games but use the PS3 as a Blu-ray player as well as playing back my home videos (using a standard DVD-R ) on HDTV at 1080i.
EDIT my movie in HD in VS11+, 30 ¡V 40 min is the max for a standard DVD with HD content. I use the Dolby 5.1 sound as this is recorded by the handycam.
SHARE ¡V MAKE DISK ¡V AVCHD (There is only one template to use for your menu maybe there is a way to obtain more?)
NEXT - BURN
Make sure you have the latest PS3 software upgrade it is 2.30 (can be downloaded from the PS3 or use a disk to upgrade via PS3 web site)
PLAY (PS3 will detect that it is a AVCHD)
Before I make a AVCHD I check the whole project viewed on the HDTV by playing a AVCH file from the PS3, to make sure I am happy with the content before a final AVCHD is produced.
SHARE - CREATE VIDEO FILE - (select what your TV is) H.264 (1920 x 1080) for a 1080p HDTV or H.264 (1440 x 1080) for a 1080i HDTV
I write this file to my external HD with USB connection. Take the drive to the PS3 and plug in the USB port on the PS3 ( you can use a flash drive if it can hold the required volume of the video)
Under VIDEO in the PS3 find the file by using the DISPLAY ALL function. You will see it is titled an AVC file by the PS3. ENTER and it should play in all it¡¦s glory!!
It may play smother if you copy the file to the PS3 Hard Drive
Hope this helps

Tony -- thanks for that excellent step by step guide.
westlight -- I am not sure there is anything special about editing HDV with a Quad Core. As you will see from my System button, I have one too!
Unfortunately, VS11.5+ was not written to take full advantage of the quad cores, nor indeed of Vista 64 bit. Hopefully, that will be rectified in VS12.
However, the main point about a Quad is that has all the oomph necessary for HDV editing, including the difficult and very resource-intensive AVCHD format.

Hi Tony, and Ken
Tony, Thanks for the step by step information. I'll give it a try...once I get my new system connected, all the programs installed, all the bugs fixed, etc...
Ken, I wasn't sure what that earlier post was referring to regarding etechs Quad Core experiences. I assumed there was no big issues having seen several forum members systems profiles, including yours.
Take care!
