Creating a Video Editing Profile

Post by terry dennis »

I am going through Steve's treatise on Creating a Video Editing Profile and get to the bit near the start of Step 2 concerned with disabling internet connections.
Steve shows , under Device Manager , a folder called 'Modems'. I don't have this on my system ! The only place that I can find 'Modems' is in Control Panel / Phone & Modem Options / Modems. However , under the Modems tab is two options ; ADD and REMOVE.
Can anyone offer any advice on this step ?

On a second aspect which Steve may comment on is the section on Editing the Start-up Menus and Registry. Personally , I would be very uncertain of myself tinkering with the Registry. So my question is , if I did not do this part of the process , would it make a big difference to the overall success of a Video Editing Profile UPTO this stage ? Does that make sense ?

You will only have a modem listed in device manager if your computer actually has one. With Broadband now being the major method of connecting to the internet I suppose many new computers no longer come with a modem.

New Laptops will no doubt still have a modem so that mobile users can still connect via a phone line when there is no wireless connections available.

Regarding the Registry tweaks, Yes I can understand the reluctance to mess with the Registry. An alternative means of disabling unwanted startup programs originating from the registry is to use MsConfig.

From the Windows START button, select RUN and then type msconfig - here you will see various tabs where you can disable items by ticking/unticking boxes.

Should I create new hardware editing profile on a Vista mc ?

Post by chris_huggett »

I have a Dell dual core machine running VS11+ and Windows Vista Home Premium. Shoul I create a new editing profile as recommended by Steve for XP ? If so, would the steps be the same ? Regards Chris

Steve

Yeah ! My modem is an external one as part of my VirginMedia cable connection.

I suppose I just disconnect it ?

Thanks for the bit on the msconfig ; I will have a look at that. Is that something that could be put into ones Video Editing Profile somehow ?

Regards

Startup items that are disabled in MsConfig will remain so until you turn them back on again. The difference though is that MsConfig will affect all user accounts. The "Video Editing Profile" is activated when you turn your computer on and will enable or disable items according to what has been set in any particular profile.

Steve

I've looked at msconfig and , as you are no doubt aware , there are various tabs. General/System.ini/win.ini/Boot.ini/Services/Startup

You have the option in the latter two to 'Disable all' and I guess that these are the two that one should disable .......... and then 'enable' when one has finished the VideoEditing session ?

Does one disconnect the external Broadband modem connection as well ?

This is why it is best to create a dedicated Video Editing profile (XP Only) rather than use other methods. With a dedicated profile you can "set it and forget it" and disable anything that is not needed whilst editing. This will include your broadband modem.

With other methods such as disabling start up items using MsConfig, or forcing things to close using End It All the time taken to disable and later re-enable these things might cancel out the advantages of any increase in speed and time.
