Crashes after install then crashes, crashes, crashes...
I really love everything I can do with Ulead Video Studio and getting better with it all the time.... HOWEVER... It takes me LITERALLY DAYS to do what should take me a few hours because I can't keep the program up and running.
Just to get past the traditional questions... Yes I have reinstalled both as suggested on the Corel help articles and by using add/remove control panel. I've done so with turning off all firewalls and anti-virus and security software before reinstalling and with all non-essential background programs turned off. I have also installed the VideoStudio11 updates and service pack. And I have just updated XP with Service Pack 3. I upgraded my video card from the onboard one to GeForce 7300.
What happens: Every time after installation and upon opening Ulead the first time (and this happened the first time I installed it also) I get a warning message that the program has encountered a problem and must close. When I reopen the program a second time it stays up and runs... for a while.
But it will keep crashing. Sometimes after 30 minutes or so, sometimes almost immediately. Many times it crashes when I am in a clip and then click on the ruler above the tracks window where it indicates where you are in the whole video timeline. But it also crashes at other times.
I have paid for Corel support and talked to a guy who said that if I was using avi clips that they (being containers for other video formats) may be the problem and that the VSP file had become corrupted and that I would have to create a new one and start over. A BIG job but I did it and translated all my avi files into mpg. Then what I started doing is creating my video in sections of a minute or two a section, creating mpg files out of the sections then bringing them all into another VSP for the final video. But this did not stop the crashing, only made it easier when I had to remake a VSP file that got so corrupted I couldn't keep it up anymore and had to create a new one.
BTW, the tech guy said he would work with me via email after that but he has yet to respond to my emails.
Please, can anyone help me?

I suspect the support guy is on the right track... All of my crashes were caused by (corrupt?) MPG files. The best format is AVI/DV, which is less-compressed at 13GB per hour. So, I'd suggest trying to convert your files from their present AVI format to AVI/DV, if you can do that without crashing...
You may need to use a 3rd-party conversion program, and maybe a different editor (I had to buy a special-purpose MPEG editor). But, this depends on your original AVI format, what your output target-format is, and on what kinds of editing you are doing (if any).
I don't suspect the VSP file. The VSP file (Video Studio Project) file is the set of instructions, it does not contain any actual video.
The more compressed the formats are the most troublesome. My problem files were MPEG-2, but people who work with MPEG-4, DivX, WMV, etc., seem to have even more trouble. And, usually the file will play-back fine... Frequently, there is no hint of trouble until you try to edit or convert the file to a different format.

The video card shouldn't have anything to do with it. All of the editing/processing is done by the CPU. The video card is just used to display the resulting image. (Video games are different, they do use the video card for real-time image processing.)I upgraded my video card from the onboard one to GeForce 7300.
Does that ever help?Yes I have reinstalled both as suggested on the Corel help articles...
Too bad he won't work with the Video Studio programmiers to fix the dang problem! I can understand it having trouble with a particular file. It should tell the user which file(s) are "bad", and maybe what the problem is... But, a good program wouldn't crash!BTW, the tech guy said he would work with me via email...

Okay, I can understand how a bad mpg file could be the problem. But the tech guy told me to use mpg INSTEAD of avi.
Also, this does not explain why the program would crash when I open it immediately after install. There are not video files involved.
Would you know anyway for me to check if there is a conflict with another program?

This is in the MSP board, but it applies equally to VS.

In all of this, you have not told us exactly which brand of .avi you are talking about. There are over 800 different video formats which use the .avi extension, and they vary extremely widely in their properties and possibility of editing. So please right click on one of those files *within* Video Studio (either in the timeline or the library pane) and copy all its properties here please.
Also, have you gone to the Microsoft DirectX website and download the latest update patch. The current one is dated March 2008 and can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
Note that it updates both DirectX 9.0c (XP) and 10 (Vista). The number of your DirectX installation will not change, but the patch gives extra functionality in a number of areas and corrects other faults in VS11 in particular which do appear linked to Windows updates. Note also that DirectX is not included in the automatic Windows updates, so if you have not manually gone to the site and downloaded the update, you are using an old version of DirectX.

I've been experencing the same issues & it's getting worse.
Each time I open VS10+, it disappears from the screen with no warning after being open for 3mins or less. Once I complete a task in the project that I am working on, VS is pretty stable. The problem with this is I keep reminding myself to save after every change, otherwise VS will crash for no apparent reason & I lose the changes I made.
Believe me, it's not your system in spite of what others may suggest. The list is way too long on what I attempted to find out what is causing VS to crash the way it has.
I am patiently waitng for VS 12. I did not upgrde to VS11+ because that upgrade didn't have anything more I wanted.
If VS 12 doesn't solve these issues, it's bye bye VS.

Then what is it, VideoStudio? If so, then why doesn't everybody's crash? I don't think you can lay the blame soley on VS. It is obviously conflicting with something on your system.Believe me, it's not your system in spite of what others may suggest.
