My old friend good ole DVD shrink

Post by tonyjer »

Hi Everyone

Have been using DVD shrink succesfully for some time now to put 2 and sometimes 3 hours of MPEG video files onto a standard DVD.

I have always followed the routine of creating TS folders and then using DVD shrink to reduce and burn. I have been pleasantly surprised with the results-certainly good enough to watch, but I have one query.

When I create the original video files I normally get 2 due to Win ME 4GB file size limitations. (I normally use DVD pal resolution and use 6000 bit rate)

I notice that DVD then "analyses" and re rencodes at a nominal bit rate of about 700-800 bit rate. Is this simple maths Ie 120 mins * 700 just about squeezes onto a 4.7 Gb standard DVD+R?

I only ask because I know that you are recommended to adjust the resolution to suit the bit rate and 720*576 combined with the DVD shrink low bit rate might not be optimum.

Does Shrink do the calculations for you etc or does it need to be manually tweaked for these big jobs?

Many many thanks

I've been using DVD Shrink in just the same way.

I've noticed that the material is compressed to just larger than 4GB, whether I start with 5GB or 6GB or whatever. (Usually I don't want to put 10GB on one DVD; I would use two.)

DVD Shrink efficiently uses the space on the DVD. I'm satisfied.
