Freeze upon saving MPEG-2 files

Post by Anna »

Hi again, it's me having issues again :D
Now, all day Video Studio Pro was working just fine when suddenly, it decided to totally freeze when saving projects as MPEG-2 files. Whether I accept or cancel that wizard thing, as soon as the progress bar appears, it freezes. All I can do is close, start again and hope it'll work.
It saves WMV just fine, but upcoming Wednesday, I need to show my short film to 80 people on a big, big screen and I doubt WMV is made for that

Now, the only thing that was unusual was that I forgot to delete a few random, useless bits (images, footage, sound bits) at the far end of the time line which created a huge non-content gap between the actual movie and those random bits. But now that I removed them, it should work if that was the problem

Please help me once more?

Come on! You've been around now enough to know we need more information than you have provided. I also note that you have still not filled in your System button details. So we need to know the format of the video that makes up your project, where it came from, the specifications of the equipment involved in filming and capturing it, the editing you did, and your computer specs, including operating system. Otherwise, it is a bit like you ringing up a car mechanic and telling him that all of a sudden your car doesn't work, and expect him to give a sensible solution based on that wealth of information...

I'm sorry, I just don't know how to find certain info on my PC. I filled in my profile info as well as I could, but...

OK. But surely you know where the video came from, and can see the brand and model of the camera if a camera was involved. You can get the properties of the original video by right clicking on one of the files within Video Studio (with the file either in the timeline or in the library pane) and select Properties. Similarly, you go to File > Project Properties to see what properties are involved there if they are different. You know what editing you may have done. And then you also can see what properties are selected when you go to Share > Create Video File > DVD (or mpeg-2)...

Oh my god, I'm sor sorry, I'm just so confused....
Okay, my camera is a SONY DCR-SR32, internal hard disc, USB connection. Recorded format is MPG.
I admit there's a huge lot of small clips in this project as it's a bit of a psycho movie with lots of intercutting...
So, I cruelly cut up all them clips, re-arranged them, color-corrected and diffuse-glowed or distorted many, played with the playback speed and so on. I guess that's a "bit" more than what I usually do...

So now I finally managed to save a WMV file of the unfinished thing for check-ups, Youtube size, because this thing now also got a memory problem. Guess a 7 minute project isn't made for Packard Bell PCs

Hi Anna,
One of the things you probably need to get a hold of regarding your editing is the nature of MPEGs. MPEG was originally designed as a distribution format not as an editing format.
I wont bore you with the gruesome details but part of the difficulty you will have in mercilessly hacking at those MPEGs is that an unbelievable amount of calculation needs to be done to apply those filters, cuts, speed changes etc.
Then compressing all that to another more compressed file type just makes it get worse!
MPEGs in general are fine to edit as long as you keep it pretty simple.
