MF 6 No audio on DVD

Post by cjr950 »

I have been creating DVD's for years using mpeg files created with a Hauppauge 350 and SageTV. I just created a DVD but there is no sound on the disc but the mpeg file does have sound when I play in MF 6. Does anyone have any idea why my output does not have audio?

What format is the audio on the DVD? ...Or, maybe there's no audio... What format is Movie Factory configured for? :P

The Hauppauge card captures to MPEG-2 audio which is not a valid NTSC format. MPEG-2 audio is optional on NTSC DVD players, so some players can't play it. If you live in an NTSC country, use Dolby AC3 or LPCM audio. (If you live in a PAL country, your PAL player will play MPEG-2 audio.)

Did you edit the file? If so, try making an unedited version from the same file. I have a Hauppauge card (PVR250) and I've had lots of different weird problems with edited MPEGs.* (The most common problems were "lip-sync" problems.) For me, the solution was to switch to the Womble MPEG editor (~$100 USD).

The version of Womble that I have can make a DVD-compliant MPEG-2 file with AC3 audio. Then, Movie Factory doesn't have to do any conversion. But, that hasn't been necessary... As long as I edit with Womble, Movie Factory can recode/convert the file without problems. And, the version of Womble I have can author (but not burn) DVDs. But, I haven't even tried that because its feaures are very limited.

* NOTE - All of my MPEG editing problems were with Movie Factory 3 and Video Studio 8. I swiched to Womble, and I haven't bothered trying to edit MPEGs with "modern" versions of the Corel/Ulead programs. I think some of these issues have been solved, and I'll probably try it again when I need an effect/filter that I don't have with Womble.

Here are my setting for the DVD. They match the settings of the mpeg file. I use VideoReDo to edit my files and have never had a problem with no sound before. All settings have been the same and the input file does have sound. I even get sound when I preview my DVD when I am in MF 6 so that is the weird part because the final output has no sound.

MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Upper Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 4:3
Video data rate: Variable (Max. 7040 kbps)
Audio data rate: 384 kbps
MPEG audio layer 2, 48 KHz, Stereo

I had a similar problem. If I played the video on my computer I got sound, if I played it in DVDMF 6 I got sound, when I recorded it to DVD the sound was gone. It only happened with one video so I assumed that the video had a problem that DVDMF couldn't handle. I ended up using another program to change the format (4000kbps to 3500kbps) of the video (using AVS video converter) and it recorded fine after that.

You may try exporting the video using DVDMF and see if that helps if you don't have another program to convert videos.

Good Luck,
