Can't I create chapter menu for VCD?

Post by Banji Abereoje »

Hi all,

I use VS10. Pls I want to find out how I can create chapter menu for VCDs like it works freely for DVD. I have tried several attempts to follow the same process of DVD but while playing back the VCD, no chapter shows. Rather, the VCD plays straight from the first video frame.

Your response will be appreciated.

Your major problem is going to be that just about no one makes VCDs any more -- as I am pretty sure you have already been told in another thread. Those of us who used to make VCDs gave up doing so quite a few years ago now, and moved to DVDs. These days, when DVD burner prices have fallen so low around the world, there is simply no justification for using VCDs any longer, particularly since -- as was noted on the other thread -- there was no uniformity as to the DVD players which would even play home made VCDs, with or without menus. And right now in Australia, at least, the price of blank DVD discs is even *cheaper* than the price of the blank CDs which are required for VCDs!!

Now, because of your heart-felt plea, I dug around in my old collection of discs from my early days of video editing, and in fact I managed to find two which I made back in 2002 where I did in fact make menus for them which worked. IIRC, though, I was using Video Studio 7 then, which was my first video editing experience. But the problem is that I don't remember doing anything special to make the menus. In fact, I have also just looked through the VS7 Manual, and found in the menu section that it simply gave the same instructions for menus for DVDs, SVCDs and VCDs. And that accords with my recollection that I did nothing different to make the menus for my VCDs than I did later for my first DVDs...

As I say, though, I was using VS7 for that. And I simply don't know if there were any changes in later versions for VCD menus, though I doubt it very much. But by VS8, I had bought my first DVD burner and haven't looked back since...

Yes you can create chapters on a VCD with VS10. Here is a quick guide.

Hi Banji

You are not being ignored, I replied to your original post, strange it does not show.

Anyhow to add to the replies.

As you are creating a VCD I assume you don¡¦t own a DVD burner and only have a CD burner.

I created a VCD with menus and chapters. ( a long time since I worked with Vcd )
Using the same process as for creating DVD there was no problems.

But there are differences in the menu¡¦s, that is in the way you navigate the menu¡¦s.
When you playback you have to use the numeric key pad, selecting 1-2 3 etc
I do not think you can navigate the menus using the arrow keys. Nor the mouse when using the PC.

So if you hit the play button then the disc will play from the beginning.

By using the Key Pad and selecting (1) you should access the chapter menu.
From there selecting a chapter will play to the end, it will not return to menu after each chapter.( that¡¦s normal even for DVD¡¦s)

SVCD

By creating an Svcd I think you can navigate the menu structure in a similar way as for Dvd¡¦s.
Svcd¡¦s are a better quality but limited to 40 minutes per disc.

Hope this Helps
