DVD Burn stops at 3%

Post by Eureka »

I'm using Video Studio 11+ and have made and burnt plenty of movies without a hitch. However this time I'm trying to burn a movie, which as always, is around 3.99GB It stalls at 3% and that's it, the whole program hangs and the elapsed time just keeps on ticking away.

When I first got the fault the movie was 5.9GB and I was trying to burn it to a dual layer disk and had the same problem. I have had a big edit to get it down in size (3.99GB) so it would fit a standard 4.7GB DVD but I still have exactly the same problem.

Any help would be very welcome.

How are you trying to burn, by going straight from your project in the timeline to Share>Create Disc? It may have worked before, but some people have problems when using this workflow.

Users have developed the Suggested Workflow which is:

1. Capture and edit your project
2. Go to Share>Create Video File and create a DVD-compliant MPEG-2 file
3. Clear the timeline by choosing File>New Project
4. Go to Share>Create Disc
5. In the burn module use Insert Media File to insert your MPEG-2

One little thing you might want to look at is in the menu creation stage in the burning module. When you open the burning module (Share > Create Disc), you first insert your video in the burning "timeline". If you want to add Chapters, then click the Add/Edit Chapters button. Then you click next, and the page where you choose a Menu template appears. Once you have selected a template, you click on the Edit tab on the same page to select background music, change the background photo etc.

Down in the bottom left corner of the Edit page, though, is an innovation in VS11, and I have found that it slows down my burning stage enormously, and even brought it to a complete halt. Now I never use it.

There are two icons, one above the other, labelled Menu In and Menu Out. Using them is supposed to animate the transition from the menu to a selected video clip. You will see that the Menu In icon is disabled by default (circle with diagonal line through it). But the Menu Out button is enabled. And this was the culprit. Click on the icon and it brings up a choice of animations. Choose the disabling one identical to the default for Menu In. Then proceed to burn. I think you should notice a considerable improvement in the speed.

Thanks Black Lab, it worked first time. And thank you to Ken for your input.

Interesting to note that following Black Lab and making a MPEG2, the finished file size is much smaller (around 2.5GB from 3.99GB) and I can't see any loss in quality, so that's good too.

Thanks again
