VS10+ Problem with Video Added to Project

Post by Jeffrey604 »

Hello,

I am trying to create a DVD from various home video clips, but the rendered (or previewed) file only plays the video clips from my camera. At the transition to the other video clip (from another video source), the frame freezes, and I get only the thumbnail of this frozen clip for the remainder of the rendered video (~30 min.) The clips that work come from my camcorder and are captured directly into VideoStudio 10+. These were recorded to miniDV tapes in 16:9 format. The clip that gives me the trouble is from another camcorder and was captured (on a Mac) into the QuickTime movie format. The original source is also miniDV tape (which I do not have access to at this time) in 4:3 format. I have tried adding the QuickTime source to the VideoStudio project and have also tried converting it to AVI, both with the same odd result (the still image). The QuickTime clip previews just fine in "Clip Mode", but refuses to render anything but the still thumbnail in "Project Mode" or in actual renderings to video files. I have provided the video file properties below to the extent this may provide any insight into the issue. Any assistance or insight into this issue would be greatly appreciated!!!

The clips that render just fine have the following settings:
File
File format: Microsoft AVI files - OpenDML
Frame rate: 29.970 frames/sec
Data rate: 3512.11 kbps
Video
Compression: DV Video Encoder -- type 1
Attributes: 24 bits, 720 x 480, 16:9
Audio
Compression: DV Audio -- NTSC
Attributes: 32.000 kHz, 12 bit, Stereo

The clips that do not render (only get a still thumbnail for 30 min) have the following settings:
File
File format: QuickTime Movie Files
Movie Size: 720 x 480
Video Track 1 Compression: H.264
Attributes: 24 bits, 720 x 480
Frame rate: 29.934 frames/sec
Sound Track 1
Compression: 16-bit Little Endian
Attributes: 48.000 kHz, 16 bits, Mono

The VideoStudio 10+ project properties that I am using are (intended to be burned staight to DVD to will be about 45 minutes in total runtime):
NTSC drop frame (29.97 fps)
MPEG files
24 bits, 720 x 480, 29.97 fps
Lower Field First
(DVD-NTSC), 16:9
Video data rate: 8000 kbps (constant)
LPCM Audio, 48000 Hz, Stereo

How have you attempted to convert the quicktime files and to what format of "avi" - it comes in several flavours.

You can try converting with Super - a free file converter. Try converting to either DV or to MPEG2.

Thank you for your response!!!

I have tried using Ulead Videostudio 10+ to convert to AVI having the following settings:
File
File format: Microsoft AVI files - OpenDML
Frame rate: 29.970 frames/sec
Data rate: 3296.97 kbps
Video
Compression: Uncompressed
Attributes: 24 bits, 720 x 480
Audio
Compression: PCM
Attributes: 48.000 kHz, 16 bit, Stereo

I am currently in the process of trying to convert the file to DV and/or MPEG2 using Super as you suggested. I will report back as to whether either of these processes worked. In the meantime, do you know if combining 16:9 and 4:3 clips into a 16:9 project would be problematic? Are there any other major incompatible formats, etc. that might be the culprit?

Thank you!

Jeff in your case the only culprit is the h.264 codec in the MOV file. VS10+ is going to have problems dealing with video clips using that codec. If I recall correctly, it was not really supported until VS11.

Any 4:3 clip that you put into a 16:9 project, will be pillared. You will have black bars appearing on the left and right sides.

Have a look at Trevor's article on 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios..

Although I could not get Super to work, I did find another freeware program that was able to successfully convert the file to an AVI (DV Video Encoder - Type 2, DV Audio - NTSC). When I added the converted file to my project, I was able to create the DVD successfully.

A special thanks to sjj1805 and vidoman for their insight and assistance!
