11.5 Plus won't Capture....
Hi there - newbie here - I have dug around but cannot seem to find answers to my problem - apologies if I missed something.
Just bought the latest 11.5 Plus. I have a Canon XH A1 and HDV 1080i footage. When I try to capture I get the 'Unable to Switch to Capture Mode, check if your video capture driver is working properly. 15023:4:2' message.
From the capture screen I can opperate the play rewind and fforward opperations on the camera from my PC through the software, but not capture. I looked at trying a different capture driver but there is only one listed (IVI ?) so there just isn't an alternative as described in previous versions.
The software is not installed on Drive C, but on H with my other progs - I mention that in case it is relevant at all.
What do I need to do?

Hi! I have the same problem and get the same exact message! Capture device is working fine but I cant even get started with Studio 11.5 to capture anything. It does not even read the correct model of my device driver but there is no option to change or fix it, if that makes any difference and if so, it shows Hauppauge win TV 885 but my device driver shows as hvr-1800. I am using composite interface and am able to capture just fine with roxio which was pre installed on my PC, but I am looking for something better and I am already frustrated with this and there seem to be no solutions to be found yet.

Hi to both of you and welcome to the forums!
You might both be getting the same message, but I think we have two totally different problems.
Phil -- lovely camera! I have a Canon HV20 but I am still jealous! However, can you confirm that you are capturing from it using the Firewire connection? And moreover, what format are you wanting to capture to -- the native HDV (high def mpeg-2) or downconverting to standard def DV?
Some Firewire cameras can also be a bit quirky -- with some it is best to connect via firewire to your computer, then switch the camera on to PLAY mode, then open Video Studio. You get the connecting 'ding ding' and a message saying that VS has detected a new video source and do you want to use that? To which you of course answer OK.
With some other cameras, you first open VS, then connect and switch on the camera...
Jenni -- you don't tell us exactly what you are trying to capture. Is it analogue video from, say, a VCR connected to the Hauppage? Or are you trying to capture (analogue? digital) TV from the Hauppage? Whatever the case, we have a number of Hauppage users on this Board, and the combined advice seems to be to use the software which came with it (I think it is called WinPVR 2000 or something similar) to capture in DVD format as that software is tweaked to work properly with the device. Or you could capture in the same format using the Roxio program if you think the capture quality is OK. Then simply open the captured video in VS for editing and authoring.

Hi & thanks Ken for your reply
I am trying to capture from an old Panasonic VHS-C analog using composite, and I also tried hooking up my sony Digital Video using both 1394 and composite and got the same message still.
I'm not sure what you are referring to on this -"the combined advice seems to be to use the software which came with it" ???
Win PVR 2000??? I don't seem to have that
The Roxio has it's own problems (not related) which is why I want another program to work with all together. Is there a solution with THIS software specific to this problem?
Let meknow -Thanks

First, your Sony digital video camera -- what is its exact model? Is it a mini DV model, or Digital 8 or something else (mini DVD, hard disk, high def)? If it connects via firewire/IEEE1394, there is no logical reason why VS cannot see it as there are many users on this Board who use that all the time (me included). Equally, though, if you are indeed trying to capture DV from the camera, you should never use the composite connection as the quality would not be great.
Apart from reinstalling VS, the only advice I can give re the Sony is to try both methods I suggested to Phil... i.e. connect and turn on camera, then start VS, or vice versa.
If you do manage to get VS to see the Sony, and depending on its exact model, then a better way of connecting your analogue camera would be via its composite out connection to the Sony's A/V IN connection, then capturing via the Sony as a passthrough device, using its firewire connection to capture in much higher quality DV format than you would ever get out of the Hauppage anyway.
I don't have a Hauppage, though as I said, many users here do. And they just about all seem to have a Winfast PVR 2000 program which is installed with the Hauppage drivers from the accompanying CD. It is in effect the controlling program for the Hauppage control panel (i.e. where you change channels etc). And you simply press the red REC button on that control panel to begin capturing. And of course there is a configuration button which allows you to set up the capture properties the way you want.

Yes you need to connect the analogue camcorder to the Hauppauge TV card with your composite cables.
To capture TV it is preferable to do so with WinTV2000 which has far more control over the capture process than any other software. You should have a copy of WinTV2000 on your Hauppauge CD that came with the TV card.
You can also download a copy from the Hauppauge Website.
U.K. Site or U.S. Site
A guide to capturing with WinTV2000 can be found here:
MF4: Create DVD from Hauppauge TV Card - although written for MovieFactory it is so similar that you can easily work it out.
Capturing from the camcorder through the Hauppauge TV card is best done from VideoStudio.

Thanks for getting back to me.
I can cofirm that I am using Firewire and that I am trying to capture HDV format.
I will have to try the various sequences you suggested and get back to you - maybe tomorrow now.
Curiously a (ahem) rival package sees the camera on the same system straight off no problem and captures. Though it has come to light that I need to upgrade my gaphics card which I intend to do later today if I can, in order to render out to HD format.
I will come back to you as soon as I can but it wil be a day or so - other stuff to be getting on with unfortunately
Thanks again for the swift response

Hello Ken
My system seems to have sorted itself out!
I fitted an Nvida 7 series card in my PC this morning, and since I did that the capture works fine! I assume my 5 series card was the problem. I realised it would not be adequate for the general task so upgraded.
S would/could that have prevented the capture working for me?
Thank you for the support
Phil Webb
p.s. I am enjoying the camera!

Hi there
Found these massages and hope to get help form you. I got the same problem: cannot start the capture mode, 'Unable to Switch to Capture Mode, check if your video capture driver is working properly. 15023:4:2' message.
I have canon HV30 Pal (UK model) and studio 11.5 plus. I use 11.5 for my mini dv(sony HC40), which working perfectly. But failed everytime for capture HDV from my new Canon HV30.
Could you help me please?
Thanks very much.

Well in my case it seems to have been graphics card related, but then Machine is not new. An upgrade sorted it out. It was as if the software was looking at the hardware and deciding it wasn't going to work?
SO have you checked that your graphics card is up to HDV over and above DV?
The proper experts will hopefully have more to offer!

I have a Canon HV20 -- your camera's immediate predecessor, running on a Quad and Vista Ultimate. And I have no problem capturing from the camera either in high def HDV format or downconverting to standard def DV format.
Can we assume you are using Firewire for the HV30 as you would be for your Sony HC40?
Have you tried doing the opposite to the steps you currently take i.e. if you currently plug in the camera via firewire to the computer, then turn the HV30 on in PLAY mode, then start VS11.5+ to detect the camera, instead try starting VS, then turning on the camera?
Have you updated your DirectX from the Microsoft DirectX site, using the March 2008 patch?

Hi Ken
thanks very much. Spent a few hours for re-set up my PC. Have updated Dirct X. But the problem is still there. If going to Movie wizard to capture, "cpature modele initialization failed, cannot start preview greh". And going to Videostudio, it show: unable to switch to capture modele, check if your video capture drive is working properly". Currently I have no ideas what is wrong with it.

I had the same problem "unable to switch to capture mode". My TV/Capture card works with other software but not in VS11/11.5.jinjincool wrote:Hi Ken

I am running Vista and I read that it uses the IVI intervideo standard so I decided I would try to load WinDVD8 Silver to see if loading the codec would actually make a difference, and guess what, it did! VS11/11.5 now captures beautifully!
