Capture failed..file may be corrupt.. will be deleted.....

Post by tonyjer »

Hi

Am using VS11 Plus (trial version). My task is to convert old VHS to DVD and I do so using my Canon DV as the pass thru. Have connected and set up everything up as I have always done with VS8.

VS11 Plus recognises the Camcorder and the capture initiates OK but then fails after about 10 seconds with the above message. I've fast forwarded to other sections of the VHS just in case there's a blip in the tape but I get the same result (I set the capture format to DV (type 1 default) as I've always done and also tried tried DVD captue format with the same result.

I have a nasty feeling that someone is going to advise me that these later versions of VS are more sensitive to video glitches and this makes converting VHS more problematic etc. I really hope not as I never had one problem doing this with VS8 no matter how old the VHS!

Your advice would be much appreciated as usual.

I am afraid you have found a certified bug in the program. VS11/11+ (including the current trial version) simply will not capture from an analogue source using a mini DV/Firewire camera (or Digital 8 camera) being used as passthrough. Nor will it capture from an external analogue-to-Firewire capture device, or for that matter from a Digital 8 camera actually playing an analogue 8mm or Hi8 tape. And I am afraid there is nothing you can do about it in the trial version. It is caused by the new capture module Corel used in the version (the IVI -- or InterVideo -- Capture Component) which replaced the variety of capture plug-ins which worked quite well in previous versions.

Corel maintains it had to use it because the previous ones relied on DirectShow technology which does not work with Vista. However, there are a number of advanced editors, such as Adobe Premiere Pro 3, which still use DirectShow and it seems to work very well indeed with Vista. (Indeed, Pro 3 is a specifically Vista program!) So I am a bit suspicious and think the substitution had more to do with the fact that InterVideo itself (which took over Ulead 2 years ago) probably used its own capture technology in the new version which it had started developing when Corel then bought out InterVideo and simply continued the technological shift. Just my suspicion, mind you...

The update patch of 6 November 2007 will fix the passthrough problem. However, of course it will not work with a trial version!

However, you can download and try a small freeware program called WinDV which will still capture DV via firewire excellently under Vista (windv.mourek.cz ). Or you can use Windows Movie Maker which comes with Windows as well. If you use it, however, make sure you have it set to capture DV. Otherwise it will capture in .wmv format which is difficult to edit. Once captured, you can then simply open the DV in VS for editing.

Thanks

My 5 year old son will be much relieved. My project was converting about 20 episodes of 1960s Batman to DVD for him!

Hi

Other that Win-DV, you could always use VS 8 to capture then edit with VS 11
