I am afraid you have found a certified bug in the program. VS11/11+ (including the current trial version) simply will not capture from an analogue source using a mini DV/Firewire camera (or Digital 8 camera) being used as passthrough. Nor will it capture from an external analogue-to-Firewire capture device, or for that matter from a Digital 8 camera actually playing an analogue 8mm or Hi8 tape. And I am afraid there is nothing you can do about it in the trial version. It is caused by the new capture module Corel used in the version (the IVI -- or InterVideo -- Capture Component) which replaced the variety of capture plug-ins which worked quite well in previous versions.
Corel maintains it had to use it because the previous ones relied on DirectShow technology which does not work with Vista. However, there are a number of advanced editors, such as Adobe Premiere Pro 3, which still use DirectShow and it seems to work very well indeed with Vista. (Indeed, Pro 3 is a specifically Vista program!) So I am a bit suspicious and think the substitution had more to do with the fact that InterVideo itself (which took over Ulead 2 years ago) probably used its own capture technology in the new version which it had started developing when Corel then bought out InterVideo and simply continued the technological shift. Just my suspicion, mind you...
The update patch of 6 November 2007 will fix the passthrough problem. However, of course it will not work with a trial version!
However, you can download and try a small freeware program called WinDV which will still capture DV via firewire excellently under Vista (windv.mourek.cz ). Or you can use Windows Movie Maker which comes with Windows as well. If you use it, however, make sure you have it set to capture DV. Otherwise it will capture in .wmv format which is difficult to edit. Once captured, you can then simply open the DV in VS for editing.
