I've spent the last four hours trying to get my video imported to my video studio 11 (trial).
I have a cheap aiptek dv, and I just want to edit out a small bit from one of my videos to put online. the files save to my computer as .asf I followed the instructions to rename them to .mp4 & I was still receiving file format mismatch. I followed these instructions:
¡´ First, you will need to set your project properties to HD 720p. ****the only thing I couldn't figure out how to do, i assume this just means to do everything below:****
¡´ Open ¡§Video Studio Editor¡¨; you will need to click on ¡§File¡¨ and then ¡§Project Properties¡¨.
¡´ Click ¡§Edit¡¨ go to ¡§Compression¡¨ tab ¡V Change from ¡§NTSC¡¨ to ¡§MPEG-2¡¨ ¡V Slide the quality bar to the right = 100%.
¡´ Click ¡§General¡¨ tab ¡V change the ¡§Frame Size¡¨ to ¡§1280x720¡¨, this will keep your video at the true HD resolution.
¡´ You may now import and edit your videos.
after all of that I'm still getting file format mismatch. I looked through the forum and it seems like mismatches are a common issue, but everyone having the problem seemed to be uploading dvds.
I'll send you cupcakes if you help me.
so frustrated!

Welcome to the forums,
First the .asf format is a streaming flavor of WMV. Both are very highly compressed and not meant to be edited. However you should be able to insert them by right-clicking on the storyboard or video library, and select insert video.
EDIT
I just had a look at some of the Aiptek camcorders. What I've found, stated they record to either a MOV or MPEG4 format. I would suspect the one you have uses the MPEG4, since your instructions were to change the extenstion from ASF to MPEG-4. Which model do you have?
Working with HD video in VS is a little different than that of SD video. The models I found that recorded HD, uses the h.264 codec. There is an update pack for VS11, that addresses issues with this codec. However the sad thing is that the update packs will not install to trial versions..
I'm curious if your camcorder records HD (h.264) how did you get the file on your PC as an ASF file?

Moreover, if it recorded in high definition (HD) it is unlikely to be a cheap camera. I suspect you have an el cheapo camera, but have somewhere or other found instructions relating to a HD version. Where did the instructions come from exactly? And I can only repeat Ron's request for an exact model number for your Aiptek...
That being said, if you have started off with .ASF format, and only want to put the end result on line, then in a sense you are trying to crack a peanut with a sledgehammer. .ASF is a windows special format, and one of the more common ways of posting video on the web is using the more common, and notionally lower quality, Windows Media Format (.wmf), which in fact is just another version of .asf. My own inclination in that case would be to use Windows Movie Maker which comes with both XP and Vista, and use that for your editing and recoding to .wmf. It should also be much quicker than in VS which does not do Microsoft formats either particularly well, much less quickly.
