VS 11.5 PLUS installed on top of VS8

Post by tonyjer »

Hi All

Previously posted about my Vista/VS8 compatibility problem.

Was convinced to wait for imminent release of version 12 as I will be able to update. Will do this but in the meantime have downloaded VS11.5 Trial version. Have no intention to buy of course but have umpteen projects to cram into the next 30 days!

Am never sure of the protocol in these circumstances. Should I have uninstalled VS8 before downloading the trial version? It seems to have worked OK and I now have the 2 icons on the desk top. I was also aware that I needed the VS8 serial number etc to upgrade to VS12 and thought that the old programme would need to be recognised on the PC to facilitate the download of VS12 (not sure about the validity of that statement!)

All other things being equal, when 11.5 is disabled after 30 days will I need to remove all traces to upgrade from VS8 to VS12?

In relation to 11.5 do the 3 eternal truths still apply? Ie
1. Ensure project and capture properties match
2. Always create a video file before burning DVD
3. Clear the timeline when creating DVD

Many thanks again for your time and fantastic expertise.

Tony :P

Apart from the Vista compatibility issue with VS 8, there is no reason why you can't have multiple versions of VS on your computer at the same time. The only problem which seems to occur is when people uninstall one version and accidentally delete a common file which is still needed by the other version.

Re upgrading -- you only need these days to have an earlier version's serial number, which you are required to enter. In other words, the earlier version does not need to be actually installed or you don't have to put an installation disc for an earlier in the drive for the newer version to see it.

And yes, you must totally uninstall VS11 trial version before installing any newer version. First, it is useless after 30 days so you might as well clean up. But more to the point, even though you are talking about installing VS12 at some stage, there have been known issues when simply activating a trial version.

And a final 'yes' to the "eternal truths" -- though (2), and consequently (3), are matters of personal experience. You need to experiment to see if you have any trouble burning directly from a project file with your new Vista machine. Many people can, and the ability of VS to do so has greatly improved IMHO is the past couple of versions. Mind you, that being said, I am so set in my ways that I still use the tried and trusted workflow reflected in those truths, rather than learn the new trick!!!

You will see it has nothing to do with bugs or faults, it has a lot to do with doing things one step at a time and checking things before moving on to the next stage.
