unable to capture from VCR

Post by donkey »

I am using video studio 7 and i am trying to capture an footage off vcr, edit some stuff out and burn it onto disc. I have a WinFast DV2000 WDM Video Capture (pal) and tv tuner (pal). When I play the video I can watch it through the computer but when I try and start the capture, it stops and gives a message "failed to build a preview graph. Capturing failed the file is corrupt and unusable. It will be auto deleted." after i click ok then another box comes up and says "unable to switch to capture mode, check if your video capture driver is working properly.Failed to build a preview graph." below it has codes 15001:33:1 and 15024:4:2. I have checked and the above devices seem to be working properly. My computer should be plenty powerful enough to handle it I have tried to capture this many times, can someone help me please?

What I have done many times in the past with VCR's and Tivo etc... is just play the clip in your VCR, hook up your camera to the VCR, and record it into your camcorder. Then it is easy to capture from the camcorder in the usual manner with no compatability issues.

Try to update the software with the patches available for download and
your problem will be solved

Did your capture card come with capture software (other than Video Studio)? Video Studio's capture function doesn't seem to work with my Haupauge card either.

Your card may be on the (in)compatibility list. It lists FAST AV Master 2000 as incompatible.

Thanks guys for the replies. I had downloaded a couple of patches from ulead the other day and still the same problem. I am going to try to first record it onto my video camera and try it from there. Thanks.

Donkey: I also recently installed a DV2000 card, and have also experienced problems like yours, though they are not quite identical. I have subequently resolved the problem, and this might be of assistance to you.

I did not in fact use VS at first, but captured with the built-in capture in the card itself, which worked quite well (I was capturing my old travel video from an analogue camera). I also played back using the card's playback facility. I was capturing direact to PAL MPEG-2 at 6000 bps. All was fine.

Then I tried to open those files first in VS to do some editing -- no luck, the program would simply fold up its tent and sneak away i.e. it shut down. I then tried opening the files in all my other video programs, with identical results. I then tried looking at the directory in which the files were stored (different from the drive on which my video editing programs were stored), but even Windows Explorer would crash a second or two after being pointed at the directory.

I then looked at my codecs using both Gspot and Sherlock (sorry, don't have their URLs but they are freeware and can be found on Google), and to my surprise, found that I no longer had any MPEG-2 codecs on my computer except for the Winfast one installed with the DV2000 (since that continued to work ok in both capture and playback). Somehow or other, the installation of the card had bumped off the other MPEG-2 codecs or else had interfered with their action.

On the advice of THoff, I was looking for the Ligos codecs which Ulead uses, so I reinstalled them (by doing a reinstall of VS) and for good measure also reinstalled the Indeo codecs. For further good measure, I also loaded another MPEG-2 codec I found on the web (I hasten to add, not part of a codec pack). Anyway, since then, all programs now work again and I can happily load and edit all the captured analogue video.

Yes Torsten, I agree. That's why I searched for a single codec and found it on VideoHelp.com

Even the ones not loaded with the spyware/malware.

@donkey , usually the best software to use to capture from a device is the software that comes with it from the manufacturer such as PVR or whatever they name it. It's designed to work with the card, once captured import into VS for editing... Best thing to do is go to the manufacturers site and download the latest driver and/or patches and the latest software, what's available if at all will vary depending on manufacturer.

Did you try recording back into the camcorder yet? How did it go?
