VS8 AND VISTA

Post by tonyjer »

Hi All

Long time no post. Hope everyone is OK.

Have VS8 which I love (not SE) and recently purchased PC with Vista as the OS. The CD installed OK but when I try and capture I get the following error message:

"Unable to switch to capture mode. Check if video capture device is working properly".

I'vw looked at the "Got Vista" bit on the website but that doesn't quote VS8. Have also looked at the programme update packs for early versions of Windows but can't find one which specifically relates VS8 to compatibility problems with Vista.

I know my version predates Vista by about 5 years but I just luv it and it ticks all the right boxes for me!

Can anyone assure me that this is not terminal.

Many thanks as usual

Tony

Nope, sadly we can not..:(

The capture device was changed in VS10's Vista Patch, and then fully in VS11, from the DS (DirectShow) or VFW (Video For Windows) which is what VS8 would use, to IVI, one of Intervideo's creations. This was done so that VS would meet what Vista will support.

According to Corel, Vista does not support the earlier DS or VFW capture devices.

Now let's see about a possible workaround for you..;)

Are you using Firewire to transfer/capture your video from your camcorder to your PC? If so, try using the free, very lightweight WINDV. It will only capture/transfer to DV format, and only via Firewire. Using WinDV you can get your video clips onto your PC and then if VS8 will function in the other aspects, use it to edit..;)

You could also try running it in XP compatibility mode under Vista. Ulead Cool 3D/Production Studio are also not supposed to work with Vista but do in compatibility mode. (To do this, right click on the vstudio.exe file in the VS8 folder on your computer. Then select Properties > Compatibility and then tick the box beside 'Run in compatibility mode for ... XP'.)

You also need to be aware that some of the transitions (notably the album ones but apparently some of the others) will not work under Vista. Also the Indeo codec and the associated sample files that use it, will not work under Vista. These various things are not included in VS11/11.5 as a result.

If push comes to shove do what I have done with my Laptop that was pre-installed with Vista.

Creating a Dual Boot Vista/XP System

Now I have the best of both worlds, I can use all of my older programs by booting into XP, plus I have access to Vista should I ever need to use it.

No. The complicated thing is getting a non-Vista compatible program to work at all in Vista!
