Another quick update:

I tried burning the same project to my Atapi burner using the same Nero Vision Express 2 program and the burn was unsuccessful......

I am going to try that again and also disabling that drive and see what happens after that in VS. I think I already tried that but who knows.....

Will report.

Edit: Update to the Update:

Disabled Atapi burner, restarted VS11. Clicked Create Disk. Same error.

Will try some other iterations....

That sounds strange that you are presented with the choice of 4 burners when you have only two. Are they shown with their own, different drive letters? If so, then that is possibly a major part of your problem. VS might assess it is being asked to go into an area of the computer where there is an obvious conflict. While this does not explain why at least one of those burners works with Nero, Video Studio is primarily only a video editor, and its authoring capacity is somewhat limited...

As a first step, I would go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Computer Management > Storage > Disk Management. That will show you all your attached discs both HDD and optical. If you have 4 optical drives showing there, I would disable or delete the second entry for each.

It is also interesting that the attempted burn using your second drive and Nero did not work. That too points to something being fundamentally wrong with the hardware set-up.

Ken, Disk Management shows me me two drives, CD-ROM 0 DVD E: and CD-ROM 3 DVD e:

I only saw the drives listed twice in Nero one time and have not been able to duplicate that. Every time since I see only two.

I have pretty much resigned myself at this point to using VS11 only for editing and to author and burn DVDs in a diffenrt program, Nero being the one for the moment though its hapter creation function is pretty clunky in the version I have.

However, now I have another problem. Before I started any re-installation procedures, I copied my Library .dat files to another drive as suggested by Vidoman way back in the beginning of these postings. I know I tried copying them back after the first re-intallation and having them appear again. But when I copy them back now, into the indicated directory, they do not appear. I can see that the files are there when I run Windows Explorer.

I have put a LOT of time into developing libraries contianing clips for many different projects, gleanied from dozens of hours of .avi files.

I am reallly hoping that by going though all these other step to try to resolve my one problem that, now that I am giving up on it and going to a work-around, I have not done something in the VS11 program that it will not recognize my libraries. At this point, this is an even bigger concern to me than the original problem.

Any suggestions?

The updates tend to confirm my suspicions towards the Operating system or possibly faulty IDE cables.

Firstly - System Restore.
After turning the clock back, you can turn it forward again even after making changes. How many times you can use system restore depends upon the size of your hard drives and how much hard drive space you have told Windows it is allowed to reserve for this purpose.

A better insurance policy than system restore is to get a third party program that will create an image of your hard drive. It is the same sort of thing as creating a DVD Image file where you can use that image to burn several copies. When you make a hard drive image, you can restore your computer to that exact state in a very short space of time. You can even remove the hard drive and place a new unformatted one in its place, then use the hard drive image to be back up and working in something like 10 minutes (dependant upon the size of the hard drive and how much stuff you have installed).

Such programs are Norton Ghost, Acronis True Image and various others.
However you need to get your system working properly before creating such an image otherwise when you restore the image you will restore the errors with it!!

Try going to the hardware manager and uninstalling all instances of these "4" CD/DVD drives and then re-booting your computer. Windows will re-install the drives - now check if you only have 2.

If this fails turn the computer off and unplug it. Take off the side panel and then remove the ribbon cables connecting the motherboard to the CD drives, check them for damage, re-insert them and turn the computer back on.

That is enough for now, let us know the result.

CD-ROM 0 DVD E: and CD-ROM 3 DVD e:
Are you sure both drives have the letter 'E' assigned to them, one in lower case? Or was that a typo? They should of course have different drive letters assigned to them, or else the computer is seeing only one drive and for some reason is assigning the same drive letter, which I thought would be impossible... :?:

Ken, I am sorry but that was a typo. It shows two DVD drives, D: (the Atapi Drive) and E: (the Pioneer drive).

I have repeatedly un-installed/installed, disabled/enabled, and updated the driver on both drives, re-started, etc. with no effect.

Just now I used Nero to "Copy Entire Disc" of a DVD I burned in Nero yesterday from E: to D:. It worked fine and produced a playable DVd even though yesterday I could not successfully complete a burn to the D: drive using the Nero Vision Express authoring software - it would go almost all the way through the writing process and then come to an unsuccessful completion at the very end. But the fact that I can copy and burn to the D: drive would seem to indicate that the hardware is working.

Of greater concern to me at the moment though is retrieving my Libraries so I can complete editing some projects in VS11 and authoring them somewhere else.

We actually did get 18" of very heavy, wet snow here yesterday resulting in power failures, etc., so I have been dealing with that but will now get back to trying to get my libraries back. I still have the first copies of all those .dat files preserved on an external drive. My VS_Video.dat file is 34,105KB in size - I have a lot of time invested in those libraries and hope to get them back in use.

A quick update to my Libraries saga. In short, I got them back, thank goodness. I don't know if it made any difference but I went through the complete uninstall, re-install procedure. I tried to copy the Libraries again but they did not show when I started VS11. Then I tried copying just the VS_Video.dat file and replaced the one that was the default. VS 11 was not running at that time and in Windows Explorer I went to the directory folder where the Library .dat files are stored and clicked on the new (copied) VS_Video.dat file and VS11 started. And then my huge Video Library with many Custom folders was there. I did the same procedure with my Images and Audio Library folders individually, shutting VS down each time and re-starting from the copied .dat file and in turn each of the appeared as well. I can't explain it but at least they are there again.

My Create Disc problem still occurs without fail but at least for the moment I can edit in VS and burn using Nero.

I have not re-installed the Updates to 11.5 and am somewhat afraid of doing that and maybe losing my Libraries again. Perhaps after I get some projects completed.

I am having the same issue with Ulead VS 11 plus as 'babylon' has described. I use this program everyday and this means tht everyday without fail, when I am producing a DVD, I havce to uninstall and then reinstall. It is becoming a great hassle/annoyance to have to do this because it is taking up too much time on a daily basis.
Please, if anyone has any information, I would greatly appreciate getting this issue resolved.

Seeing another poster here, I thought I would just update that I am still having the same problem as previously but I am not sure it is the same problem as mdhaase.

To restate the process that leads to my problem: I click on the Share tab, then I click on Create Disc. When I click on that I do not get any further. I get the "Ulead VS has encountered a problem and must close" message and thats that. I can restart Ulead without un-installing and re-installing but I encounter the same problem every time. Un-installing and re-installing also has no effect - I still get the same problem.

I have again installed the new Content Pack update (with no impact on my problem) but I noticed even installing that update will overwrite ALL libraries with the default original libraries. I still had my original custom libraries copies saved elsewhere and was able to copy them back using the process I described in an earlier post. I guess most other VS users do not make as much use of custom libraries as I do but it doesn't seem like installing an update should have that kind of potentially large impact without some kind of warning to the effect that if you want to keep your libraries, you better back them up elsewhere.

One other thing I have noticed since my problem became apparent is that once VS has finished loading, my computer does not usually stay in VS but jumps back to the window which was previously active, To go to VS I have to tab to make it the active window. This probably does not provide any more clues and may not even be related to the problem.

I might try installing VS11 on my laptop computer and see what happens but that runs Vista and has much less in the way of resources than my desktop. Perhaps I could use it to do the authoring in VS11.

Short Story: I GOT VS11+ TO "CREATE DISC" AGAIN!!!!!! But...

Long Story: I am not sure how I got to get past clicking on Create Disc because I have been through similar steps so many times and have tweaked and installed so many other things in trying to get it to work again. But I think I know what may have made the difference - I decided to go through the uninstall/install procedure one more time. But this time, after doing the installation of VS11+ and before installing the VS11.5+ upgrade, I installed the VS11 Patch which I had apparently never done before. Then I installed the VS11.5+ upgrade.

Upon re-starting VS11.5+ (and after re-copying my custom libraries), I clicked the Share module and then clicked Create Disc and DVD in the resulting drop-down menu. This brings me here:

Image

I was so elated to get past the "Click on Create Disc, click on DVD, get error message" stage that I thought everything was good again. BUT...

When I insert a .mpg file as follows:

Image

and click on Next as follows

Image

From this point, when I click on Next, nothing happens even though the Next button "depresses" when I click on it.

If I deselect Create Menu and click Next, I go to the Preview screen and am able to preview the video. But if I click Next from there, nothing happens.

So although I am getting a step or two farther than previously, I still cannot author/burn a DVD.

Any ideas or suggestions on where to go from here?

It has become almost a mantra with me over the past couple of months to suggest people first go to the Microsoft DirectX website and download the latest update patch. The current one is dated March 2008 and can be found at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en
Note that it updates both DirectX 9.0c (XP) and 10 (Vista). The number of your DirectX installation will not change, but the patch gives extra functionality in a number of areas and corrects other faults in VS11 in particular which do appear linked to Windows updates. The menu preview and 'building preview graph' problems seem to be amongst them.

I am back after a few short trips.....

I have again downloaded the MS DirectX update with the message that I already have the most current version installed.

I again did a complete manual uninstall/re-install process and checked my progress with each file installed. Even after only re-installing my original download version of VS11 (without content package, patch, Power Pack), I encountered the same kind of problem. I can click Share, Create Disc, and add an mpg file into the timeline. I can go to the Create Menu module or go directly to the Preview module. In each case I can click on the "Next" button but nothing happens. Nothing at all. The same thing occurred after adding each of the above VS extras, patches and updates. Clicking "Next" does nothing.

In reviewing posts since I was last on here, it looks like some other folks (i.e. Curlyman72) have had the exact same problem, or similar problems.

Is there anything else I can try?

Apart from doing a complete reformat of your computer hard drive and reinstallation of everything, I can't think of anything else for the moment.

In fact, I now have a not dissimilar, though more limited, problem of my own. I have been wanting to burn hybrid discs, using AVCHD high definition video on a standard DVD. Blu-Ray rated players, including the PlayStation 3, can read such discs and play them back in high definition. But for some unknown reason, my main Quad machine, running Vista Ultimate, allows me to process the AVCHD, build a menu and get to the last page of the burning module, but does not present me with the possibility to burn. It does not 'see' the two DVD burners in the computer, though it does when I use VS11.5+ for other types of discs. Yet my HP Core 2 Duo laptop, also running Vista, has no trouble with this type of disc.

Needless to say, I am working on it, and if I find anything which might also help you with your problem, I will post back here with the information.

Thank you Ken. I will hold off on that reformat/re-install everything prospect..... I think I would rather buy a dedicated DVD authoring program or maybe even a new computer solely for video production!

Please do post here if you find anything relevant in the pursuit of your problem.

In his May 19, 2008 Topic "*Resolved!*After Preview, Next button does nothing - VS11.5+" Curlyman72 posted a link to the Corel Support website, http://support.corel.com/scripts/rightn ... 1182463411 for "How to manually remove Video Studio 11". It is a little bit different than the one referenced by Vidoman in the second post of this topic for the "Re-installation of Software Products" which is the one I hadve been following up to now. The Corel procedure calls for the deletion of more files/folders. In his last post on his topic Curlyman72 suggested I try that procedure as it had worked for him. So I did.

AND IT WORKED FOR ME TOO!!!!

I am SO relieved. I have not tried to actually burn a DVD yet and it is late for me here but at least I got past the "Next" button and everything looked good to go. I will report back here if there are any additional problems.
