Pointer to existing thread on writing avchd to DVD-R

Post by supercar »

I'm sure I saw a thread on this previously, but I just can't seem to find it. If somebody can point me to an existing thread on writing AVCHD to a DVD-R for playback on a blu-ray player I would greatly appreciate it.

Here is a little more info on what I am trying to do and what I have done so far.

I am attempting to capture from Canon HV10 (HDV) and write out AVCHD to DVD-R for playback on a Samsung BDP-1400.

I captured the video into a project and broke it up into scenes. After editing I went to Share -> Create Disk -> AVCHD. I set it to a fixed bit rate of 15Mb/s. It created the disk while I was out (it took several hours). When I tried to play it back, it worked great (chapter worked, etc), except after about 10 minutes of playback (not sure exactly how long) it started to freeze every so often.

So, any suggestions or pointers to existing threads would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks and regards,
Dave

Seems to have worked

OK,
I tried again using a 2 step process. I created the video file leaving all settings at the default which I believe is 18Mb/s VBR. Then I wrote the disk in a separate step. I'm not sure what fixed the freezing, but this disk seems to work fine. I guess I'll have to try a few more over time to see if this works consistantly.

I don't think so. That thread appears to be about actually burning blu-ray disks. I don't have a blu-ray burner, so I can't do that. I was looking for a thread about burning AVCHD files on a DVD-R and playing them back on a blu-ray player, similar to burning HD-DVD to a DVD-R. Maybe I saw the thread on the AVS forum.

I was able to successfully burn an AVCHD file to a standard DVD-R and have it play back on my blu-ray player using a 2 step process. I may try doing the 1 step process again using the defaults if I have time.

Thanks,
Dave

Well as I can't find the post either you can submit your 2 step process as a tutorial in the competition.

I may post something, but I would like to make sure I can reproduce the results a few times. Even though I thought I was only making small changes to what the tool did, the results ended up being quite a bit different size on the DVD for each trial which makes me think I'm still not understanding everything that goes on under the hood.

Anyway it is cool that HD content can be written to cheap DVD-R disks and played back on a blu-ray player. I knew it worked for HD-DVD, but with the death of that format it is nice to have something work for playback on a blu-ray player.

Successfully created another AVCHD DVD-R

This time I tried the single step process again with all default settings and it seemed to work fine. The video was only about 7 minutes long though, so I don't know if it proves much. My first unsuccessful attempt played back fine until about 10 minutes into the video.

Again, it is awful nice to be able to play HD video through a blu-ray player using cheap DVD-R disks.

I'll continue to post to this thread any successes and/or failures as I write additional disks.

I hadn't tried writing any AVCHD to DVD-R disks in a while. I wrote another in the one step process with default settings and it work and played fine in my Samsung blu-ray player with no skips. The video was about 27 minutes, so it was plenty long to show a problem if there was going to be one.

I tried putting chapters in though and they didn't end up on the disk. I'm not sure what I did wrong, but that is the problem with only doing something about every 3-4 weeks. You never really get proficient at it.

Anyway I'm happy with the quality of the video. I'll have to try and figure out what I did wrong to not get the chapters on the DVD.

By-the-way, is there a way to play these disks back on the computer. Apparently Windows Media Player won't play them. Would Nero play them?

Regards,
Dave

Don't know about Nero, however Corel's WinDVD9 Plus is suppose to playback the AVCHD formats..

Thanks. I wouldn't really watch much on the computer. It would be mostly to verify what I wrote worked. I don't think I will spend $80 at this time to have that capability.

Thanks,

FWIW, I have just answered someone else, giving my own experience of burning hybrid high def discs on a standard DVD. See http://phpbb.ulead.com.tw/EN/viewtopic. ... 651#158651

I didn't add there that, apart from building a menu, I also inserted chapters in the normal way using the Add/Edit Chapters button in the first page of the burning module. All very neat. As far as I am aware, while other programs, including Nero 8, can burn such hybrid discs, VS11.5+ is perhaps the only one which allows you to create a normal menu for them too.

Quality is great when I play them back on my PlayStation 3 via HDMI on my 115 cm LCD HDTV...

I burned another DVD and I'm not sure I did anything different and I did get a menu. I need to go back and look at the first disk to verify I didn't get a menu on it. Maybe I somehow missed it.
