Regeneration of proxy files and Multi Trim undo - redo

Post by Boris2 »

Greetings forum. thanks for all your past help. I have been using VS for a couple of years off and on and learning by reading the forum and 'blundering' around the software. Started with a free version of VS6 that came with a capture card. Now using VS10+. Haven't delved into HD yet.
A couple of questions if I may:-
1)
Is there a way to regenerate the smart proxy files?
For no good reason - really dumb now I think about it, I changed the default location of the proxy files in the middle of a job and it seems to have screwed things up! :-(

2)
Is there a way to undo or re-do multi triming? I want to revisit some. Is it best to just to delete all segments from the time line and start again?
Thanks in advance.

If you haven't delved into HD yet how come you are using proxy files?
Proxy files are lower resolution working copies of video files. They are reduced in resolution or compression bit rate for only one reason --to speed up editing of HDV and other large video source files.

Anyway I just checked - if you delete the smart proxy files you can regenerate them by right clicking the clip on the time line and selecting
"Create Smart Proxy File"

For you other query, what you need to do is adopt a structured workflow.
Stsart a project and call it something e.g. MyProject.

Now Save as "MyProject01"
As soon as you have completed a certain editing task that you might wish to return to at a later date - e.g. to reverse some changes or if the project becomes corrupted. Save the project again as "MyProject02"
Continue to increment the suffix at each milestone in your project
so you end up with VSP files named
MyProject01
MyProject02
MyProject03
....
MyProject15
etc.

Hi sjj1805,
Thanks for your reply.
The reason I am using proxy files, I guess, is that I am using a fairly low spec machine and working with full size PAL DV and the proxy files allow preview at normal speed and faster scrolling. Without it, preview is not smooth and scroll speed is limited.
Thanks for the right - click tip.

I have had another play and now think I understand multi trimming better, which has allowed me to resolved my issue. It seems that the original file is re copied to the time line once for each extra trim and thereafter behaves as a normal clip. I was imagining it to be much more complicated. (KISS)

Thanks again for your reply and all your help through answers to others' questions.
"Have a good one."
