WinDVD 9 Plus and Canon HG10 files

Post by Nick Mirro »

I just paid $80 for WinDVD 9 Plus under the assumption that it would play the .mt2s files from a Canon HG10. WinDVD SE (that came with camcorder) does but is not at all useful. The Corel website gives a very good reason to believe that Canon HD camcorder files will play in their software...

  • NEW! AVCHD Camcorder Compatibility

Enjoy direct playback of high-definition home movies recorded with the latest AVCHD camcorders from Canon, Sony & Panasonic, either copied from the camcorder hard drive, or on AVCHD disc, or memory card.
After installing WinDVD, it seems that the Canon HD .mt2s files are not registered as playable. The app does not seem to be able to open them.

I am going to be severely angry if playback in this format is not possible. Can someone please save me from having a really bad day here? Is there some add-on that is needed?

I don't have HD but I am aware that it comes in several forms.
Perhaps you need to check the format of your Canon HG10 against this table>

The Canon HG10 uses H.264, which is supposed to be supported.

I just installed WinDVD9 plus Blu-Ray and also found that I could not open AVCHD files (.mts or .m2ts) because WinDVD9 does not include that file type in its "open file" filter. However, I learned from another forum that all you have to do is change the file extension from .mts (or .m2ts) to one of the file types included in the "open file" filter (like .wmv) and WinDVD9 will play it. Admittedly, that is a lame workaround but it does work. Until the developers add the AVCHD file types to their "open file" filter, it looks like this is the only way to open AVCHD files within WinDVD9.
