Video Studio 9 for slideshows

I'm using Video Studio 9 to make a slideshow with images and audio (no video). I have two issues. First, no matter how big or small my original files are, when I bring them into the program, some of them become pixelated. Is there a certain dpi I should be using for my images?

Also, when I try to use the Preferences, the program crashes.

Any ideas?
