The Nero Smart Encoding works the same as the VS Smart Render. Unfortunately they both suffer the same finicky behaviour!
Nero will Smart Encode but you really have to have the settings exactly right.
The one advantage it does have is that on the final screen there is an option to see just what perecentage of the project it is actually going to re-encode giving you the opportunity to go back and check your settings.
