Newbie help please!!!!!!!

I have Ulead Explorer 8.0 and this is the first time I have tried to use it. I'm trying to adjust the brightness on a photo. When I selected photo image adjustment I received a pop up stating "cannot initialize the OLE interface". What does this mean? The photo was taken with very poor light and I wanted to brighten it up. Any help would be appreciated.
