Editing the HD files using Proxy Settings

Post by tony62 »

I have learnt so much from this forum from its esteemed, learned members, that it is time for me to share my experience with VS 11+ using m2t files from my Sony HR- 7 Handycam. My PC is Pentium 4 with 1 Gig Ram. This set up was fine for my SD files but when I tried to edit the m2t files from the Handycam... horror...shock....I need a new PC! So I did some serious reading on the role of Proxy Files. I now can edit a 15 min project with ease from my meager PC, this is what I did.

Before I imported the m2t files I went into the PREFERENCES then to SMART PROXY and ENABLE SMART PROXY I set the CREATE SMART PROXY ABOVE 325 x 240
I then make a new folder for the SMART PROXY FILES
I import the files, open the SMART PROXY FOLDER and then go shopping, walk the dog, take a short trip. When all the files have been rendered to the low res files( you can see this by watching the show in the SMART PROXY FOLDER) I then can start editing after all the files have been rendered in that folder and its as simple as using the SD files in VS.

On your final render to HD, AVCHD, AVCH Disk etc. it will all render back to HD.

Patience is a Virtue!

Hope this helps anyone!

Okay, forgive my ignorance here but I'm trying to use this method.

I adjust the smart proxy setting and make the folder. Now, I import the clip to the timeline. Do I play the entire clip in Project mode to create the proxy? Or clip mode?

Also, I don't understand when you say you can "watch the show in the smart proxy folder." I open that folder with the clip playing and all I see is the file icon.

(More ignorance here) I assume this will make a smaller file, compared to the original HDV, that will be used on the timeline when editing so it won't hesitate and will run smooth, correct?

Thanks.

I'm no expert and in fact I'm going to post a question regarding Proxy files myself, but I do know that as soon as you drop the video into the timeline you'll see the conversion happening in the status bar at the bottom of MSP. Then just edit and work with the clip like any other.

Not sure what was meant about watching the show from the folder either.

Yes, in the proxy folder you will see much smaller mpeg files. In fact it reduced about 23GB down to bout 5GB in 3 hours.

Now for my question.

I like to trim all my videos and have the clips reside in the Project Tray, Media Bin, Videos. I then create nested timelines and use them there.

So how do I get the proxy files in to that section first, rather then the timeline?

Also how do I know that I'm actually working with the proxy files and not the original? When I check the Properties for the file in MSP it always points to the original.

I think you need to raise a new thread, this item was raised in VideoStudio - your comments relate to MediaStudio. This is the Tutorials forum, queries are better raised in the product discussion threads.

Oops I missed the reference to VS. I moved my post to the MSP forum.
