VS11.5 problem creating a video file from Project

Post by c5021081 »

Hello.
I've some clips captured with a Kodak photocamera, the format is MOV (MPEG-4, 24bits, 640x480). Including them in a VS11.5 project, running the project preview I had a frozen video (while the audio proceeds). So I though to convert first the MOV files into a dvd compliant format PAL MPEG2 (720x576,25fps), using "Create Video File".
Then I created the new project using the new MPG converted files, and the editing and preview worked fine.
At this point, I tried to create a Video file from this project (again PAL MPEG2 (720x576,25fps)) to be used later for burning a DVD.
The rendering starts , but hangs at 10%, the PC is completely frozen (CPU 99% used by Video studio) , after 8 hours no progress of the gauge bar.
It looks like that I've no way to create the file skipping the rendering of already converted files: how do you suggest to proceed? Should I use the MOV files and let them to be converted, although the preview is not working fluently?

Thanks a lot for any suggestion.
Dino

Well you could do a search on the board for "Kodak mov" and go to the second result and get this:

Hi.
The fix for MOV files reported in the suggested topic seems related to VS8.0, I'm using VS11.5 (full patched).
Anyway, the rendering hangs with MPEG-2 already converted files, and I'm wondering why... (thinking that the rendering could be skipped when creating the file, since the clips are already in the right format...)
Thanks a lot.

The real problem here is that the mov files are highly compressed files and are created with parameters that are WAY outside the parameters you want for DVD. The actual purpose of the format is for distribution, not editing.

In converting to MPEG2 you are asking the software to "invent" the missing bits to make it up to MPEG2. You are most likely getting hidden corruption in the MPEG2s you create because of this conversion.

The fix in that post is not specific to VS8 alone and has been applied to subsequent versions. However I can't recall anyone using it on 11.5. The reason for it is that you want to do as much as possible with the native format you have (mov) before the conversion to MPEG2 to minimise glitches such as you are having now.

Hi.
Thanks a lot for your reply.
So, summarizing, do you suggest that I should better use the original MOV files for editing the project, and then Create Video File only for the project?

I'll try, and then update the message with the result of this test.
Thanks a lot.
