Add video files, click Next, crashes

Post by willydeluxe »

VS9 + 5 in 1 patch + upgrade to VS10 + Content Pack + SP1 + Vista patch on my new Vista Home Premium Acer Aspire 5920 (Core 2 Duo 1.66, 2Gb DDR2, nVidia 8800 512Mb, 250Gb HHDD).

"Create Disc". load various Avi and Mpeg, click "Next", get to the first menu page and a Vista warning appears - "Video Studio has stopped working" and CTD.
(The CTD would normally be enough to warn me that something is wrong, but Vista is so prying and nagging that the other day it told me that my shoelaces were undone!)
Editing and saving movies works fine.

Some problem with my new laptop? I wish. I had exactly the same problem with the last two installs (I am a frequent formatter/re-installer, for a clean and speedy pc) on my previous Asus machine.
At that time I wasn¡¬t too worried because I had no real need to burn discs and thought that it was a problem with my installation that I could correct next time around.

Have I got everything I should have installed?
Anything to do with Quicktime Plugins? Since using F-Secure Internet Security I get a continuous warning at one point when installing VS that QT Plugins is trying to alter system files/configuration.
Might this be a problem with one of the movie files I am trying to burn; how come it lets me load it to the project without a warning?
Any other ideas?

That could very well be the problem. While VS allows you load a montage of video file formats, it doesn't meant that it along with your PC setup can deal with it properly.

Since the above did not work, try following A Recommended Workflow instructions can be viewed here: Recommened WorkFlow for VideoStudio.

Where did you purchase your copies of VS? If you received them from a reputable vendor (Corel, the local store), I would disable your F-secure internet protection while installing. If you trusted the seller enough to purchase from them, there is no need to have road blocks interfering with the installation.

Generally that QT warning is because QT is trying to add itself to the Start Up menu so that, for you, you can enjoy the benefits of a long and arduous boot time and for them, they can automatically update the software. Additionally you may get warnings because QT is trying to associate itself wiith every possible file it can handle. Basically it's a kind of world domination thing second only to Real Player.

And, to add to the detailed answers that Ron and Lance provided, did you tie your shoe laces?

You guys!

I shall do two things here:
- Do my homework - and read up on all the stuff I read a looong time ago and have obviously forgotten, about the proper way to do things.
- Re-install VS (all bought from the Ulead site) disabling F-Secure (and then disable QT from bootup).
- Buy some neat loafers, the slightly French kind with tassles.
- Learn to count.

What exactly does QT do in VS?

QT is used for the Auto Music, ie; Smartsounds. I'm not sure if VS will install the codec needed for creating, or encoding QuickTime "MOV" files, without installing the QT it is asking.

Well I¡¬m sorry, but the problem persists.
QT is fully installed and correct. I tried removing a possibly offending file (a VOB) with no better luck.
I read the workflow (though not necesssarily understanding it all, as it is very confusing) but I can¡¬t see anything there that is relevant: I am adding finished movie files to be burned, not edited.

The crash occurs as soon as the menu page opens.
Perhaps there is a corrupted file somewhere in the installation.

Is this the same project you are trying to author/burn? If so, try another brand new project, with completely new clips (maybe even the ones supplied with VS) and see what happens.

Did this:
- placed two VS clips in the timeline, saved them as if they were an edited movie file.
- new project/share/create disc: imported said movie file, clicked Next, menu page opens, VS crashes.

What does that mean???  Did you use Share > Create Video File > DVD??? Or did you indeed use a Save button??? If you used Save, then all you have done is save a project file (.vsp) which is NOT a video file. It is a small text file telling Video Studio what video files are included in the project , where they are on the computer and what editing has been done to them.

If you then went to Share > Create Disc > DVD, then that project file would have been automatically inserted into the burning timeline. And *that* is precisely what causes a lot of users a lot of problems.

Sorry - my bad.

What I should have said is that I created a video file of the two clips in the timelline.
That file was what I then attempted to burn.

Have you gone to the Microsoft DirectX website and downloaded the March 2008 update to DirectX? Note that DirectX is not included in the Windows schedule of automatic updates, so you have to do it yourself. Note also that the update I mention works with both DirectX 9.0c (XP SP2) and 10 (Vista). Windows updates in the past few months appear to have caused some instability in VS, particularly in the burning module. Updating DirectX seems to solve a lot of these problems.

Thanks for the tip (the things you guys know!) but alas it has not cured my problem.

I am going to reinstall VS.

I thought I had cracked the problem when, during the new install I took proper notice of the dialogue box that opened telling me that a newer version of QT was found, and to uninstall it to continue.
Uninstalled my version of QT.

New install, all protection turned off, Ulead version of QT installed. Reboot.

Share/Create disc/added a media file (two of the Ulead files rendered together (same as project settings) and saved to Desktop).

Click next - crash.

Several hours later;
A complete VS uninstall, reboot, cleanup with CCleaner, reboot.
Reinstall 1: without VS10 content pack just in case it was that - it crashed.
Installed the content pack - it crashed.

Three days later:
Format and OS re-install.

VS10 still crashes after Share/Create disc/Add media/Next.

What else can I tell you?

All other programs and Apps work fine.

Shall I reinstall Pinnacle and forget about Video Studio?

UPDATE:
Uninstalled VS10 and installed 11.5Plus. No crashing.
However, this is not a suitable solution.

Is there any way that I can get a single download of my version, without all the updates and SPs and patches?
