capture not working

Post by bbxrider »

on winxp pro for this, i admit it, cheap card
http://www.computerdirect.co.nz/products/VIDSTL01.pdf

my ulead 6+8 both work for video capture with my sony dcrpc9 via a 1394 pci card.

for the above video capture card, i can capture with windows movie maker but not ulead.
ulead 6, just displays a screen with 'static' like a tv with no antenna and ulead 8, crashes. i get the windows, no real help here, 'encountered problem and needs to close....'

since the card is working, is there some newer drivers, etc that is available that might solve the problem

Edit!
Ok, I'll admit I answered this one before reading properly!

Did the card come with it's own software for capturing?

capture not working

yes it came with ulead 8
generally though, shouldn't any (decent) capture application be able to work with whatever capture device is active, or even better, as with ulead 8, have the functionality to pick a capture device if there is more than one?

The answer to your question is no.
Unfortunately there is no rigid standard for all these devices and how they interact with both software and the operating system.
In fact a number of manufacturers intentionally tweak their products to exclude all others so that you must use their solution in an attempt to lock you in to their product line.

I understand the card came with VS8 but was there any other capturing software included? Very often these cards have their own "tweaked" software for capture and include the video editing software as a bonus.

You could probably pull all your hair out trying to solve this problem, so why don't you just capture with Movie Maker, since that works, then import those files into VS.

Depends what you are capturing from. Generally, USB isn't fast enough to capture video. If you are capturing from a dv cam it is advised to use firewire.

As far as I am aware, there is no such list. And our general recommendation in any case is to as far as possible use the capture software which comes with a device for capturing, then open that captured video in VS for editing.

From my own personal point of view, moreover, if you are looking specifically at external *USB* devices which do an excellent job, the best at a reasonable price IMHO is currently the Adstech DVD XPress DX2. However, unfortunately, that is one of the many devices which is not compatible with VS (because Adstech, its maker, will not share its proprietary secrets). But it does at least come with excellent software called CapWiz.
