Studio 11 1 hour clip shows 30 seconds

Post by Doug Fraser »

Hello
I was using XP with studio 9. Upgraded to vista and am trying out the trial version of studio 11 ( also had to buy new tuner to work with vista)

Windows media center puts a show in the "public / recorded tv" file and labels it " microsoft recorded tv show". When I load it into video studio, it converts it to a "dvr - ms" file - this converting process takes 4 or 5 minutes. Then I drop it into the story board or time line and it only shows 30 seconds. I do a properties on the dvr - ms file and confirm that it is 60 minutes.

Obviously I have done something wrong or there is a fix or update - sure would appreciate some guidance

Thanks, Doug Fraser

Ps vista is sure a pain

Doug,

I know you're pain. On my XP system, I can get as far as about 5-6 minutes into a show. I brought up the idea a few years back about VS having native support for dvr-ms. Well, I'm sad to say that it was not implemented that great in version 10, and it's much worse in 11.

You're best bet is use another program to encode your dvr-ms to another format (which will basically just strip the ASF wrapper from around the MPEG video). BTW, the ASF wrapper contains information about the show the MCE uses.

In short, Google "dvr-ms to mpeg" and you'll stop banging your head on the wall. Two notible programs are dvrmstompeg (short and quick to the point) and DVRMSToolbox (which has more encoding options, such as encoding to WMV as well as MPEG). Then just bring your mpeg file into VS and you'll be much happier.

Hope this helps,
Ron G.

Obviously I have done something wrong...
It's probably not you. It's probably the video file... There are just too many audio/video file formats and too many variations of each format. (And, I don't think Corel tries very hard to support the variations.)

When I load it into video studio, it converts it to a "dvr - ms" file...
Strange... What format is it before you load it?

You can try using a 3rd-party program such as SUPER (FREE!!!) to convert the file to another format before loading it into Video Studio. (i.e. If you are making a DVD, convert the file to MPEG-2.)

Thank you to rguthrie and DVDDOUG for their guidance. I understand my problem is not unique but following the advice of these 2 guys, I checked out a number of dvr-ms to mpeg utilities or programs. I found one that is so simple and straight forward even I can understand. I recommend checking out the following:

Thank you very much, Doug

Doug,

Glad I could be of help! DVRMStoMPEG took just under two minutes to strip a 30 dvr-ms show to its bare mpeg on my system (and it's a couple of years old). Pretty nice eh? I wish I knew who the author was so I could thank him/her.
