WinDVD9+ slow in Vista64, hangs in XP64

Post by oddius2008 »

Installed into Vista64 Premium, WinDVD9+BR takes 48secs to start playing a DVD. Anyone experiencing delays this long with Vista 64?

System AMD 4400+, 4GB, 2x320GB HDD, X-Fi Fatality, 7800GTX*.

Installed a trial edition into an XP setup, takes approx 10secs to begin playing a DVD (AMD 3800+, 2GB).

Also tried it with XP 64bit dual boot with Vista64, just hangs anyone having the same experience?

Maybe its a case for using 32bit instead.

*GPU is due for upgrade, and a BR drive just deciding what.

Noticed in one of the replies below that someone is running it in XP64.

I've done everything asked of me from CS still no joy. Over the phone they said it is a h/w problem can't see how they don't know what my system is. (tried to get a refund refused UK), runs perfectly in Vista64. The only thing CS said is it is more resource hungry than WinDVD 8.

The sluggishness in Vista64 has gone, way Vista works.

Plays back HD-DVD & BR perfectly in Vista64.

Update:

Corel email support have washed there hands of the problem, having told me to remove & reinstall twice and a bit of registry editing. Call tech support is now there answer, that's what they are supposed to be  .

Oh yes calling tech support may cost money

I installed the trial version onto Win XP sp2 . It loads slowly and hangs up when playing a DVD. I uninstalled it and have given up on it.

Just thinking aloud..... perhaps we are looking at this from the wrong aspect.
Perhaps the DVD drive or the DVD are faulty?

Have you tried making a copy of the DVD onto a hard drive folder and playing from there?

Unfortunately mine still hangs even after applying the patch. Not sure what to try next.

Did you completely remove as outlined in the FAQ's on Corel's support pages.

I completely removed, reinstalled then applied the patch before even running WinDVD and reactivating. Remembering to keep the activation code from previous install.

Thanks for the reply. I only did the "add or remove programs" for removal. Then I reinstalled. Didn't activate as you suggest and tried to install the update patch however I could not and obtained a message saying the update patch is not applicable for this product.

Then I activated it under the presumption this will change the product version so that I could then apply the update patch. This worked and the update patch applied however I still have the hang problem. My product version is the plus version with no BD.

Sorry my bad need to activate before applying patch  ,just clean reinstalled to confirm steps below.

Have you installed the 64bit version of Visual C++ 2005 link below if not, WinDVD installs the 32bit version but you need the 64bit as well as far as I can remember.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/deta ... laylang=en

Just to go through how I installed.

1. Disabled Anti-virus s/w if you want.
2. Installed vcredist_x64.exe.
3. Install and activate original WinDVD 9, terminate hung program.:(
4. Reboot.
5. Applied patch.
6. Reboot.
7. Works for me, hope it works for you. :)

thanks, already had the x64 and x86 C++ installed, retried a complete uninstall and reinstall as you suggested of widvd 9 but no luck. It just hangs on the splash same as always. I don't install the google toolbar, though i don't think that should change anything. I might try looking for a registry key that disables the windvd 9 splash that seems to be the main issue.

OK clutching at straws your directx is current?

I also edited the registry as well removing anything to-do with intervideo/corel/protexis, and deleted any folder referencing the same including hidden directories.

thanks, yep tried all that, updated direct x but same result. Corel tech support got back to me but only suggested disabling all non microsoft services....funny thing is this disables the windvd protexis service and you just get a =38 error code. I enabled it but then the hang comes back.
